James Gunn Just Had A Three-Word Comment About Supergirl, And It Should Make GOTG Fans Happy

The DC Universe is just getting started, but it’s already making an impact in cinemas and on HBO Max. The initial set of films and shows, known as ‘Gods and Monsters,’ will begin with a new *Superman* movie. Next up is a *Supergirl* film, and James Gunn has described it in just three words – a description that *Guardians of the Galaxy* fans will definitely love.

Details about the upcoming *Supergirl* movie are scarce, but excitement is building among fans, particularly after the ending of *Peacemaker* Season 2. While much of the plot remains secret, James Gunn recently hinted at something surprising in an interview with Rolling Stone. He shared that:

Supergirl especially is a space adventure. It’s like Guardians.

If the new *Supergirl* movie is anything like *Guardians of the Galaxy*, I’m definitely interested! James Gunn turned those Marvel characters into huge fan favorites, and his distinctive style and vibrant, space-based world would be a great addition to the DC Universe. We’ll just have to wait and see how much *Supergirl* captures that same feel when it comes out.

HBO Max offers streaming access to a vast library of movies, shows, documentaries, and all things DC Comics, including the DCU, DCEU, and classic titles. Subscriptions start at just $9.99 per month with ads. See the deal here.

Supergirl will be the first DC Universe film where James Gunn isn’t directly writing or directing. Although he’s still overseeing the project as studio head, Craig Gillespie directed the movie and Ana Nogueira wrote the screenplay. Because of this, it likely won’t feel like a DC version of *Guardians of the Galaxy*, but rather a story with some shared themes and feelings.

Milly Alcock made a brief appearance as Supergirl in the movie *Superman*, and her version of Kara Zor-El seems quite different from her cousin, who was raised in Kansas. She hilariously crashed into the Fortress of Solitude while drunk and ungraciously thanked Clark for watching Krypto. I’m really looking forward to seeing Krypto steal the show in the upcoming *Supergirl* movie, and to finding out what kind of trouble Supergirl gets into!

James Gunn did a fantastic job with the *Guardians of the Galaxy* movies, all of which are available to stream on Disney+. The first film in 2014 was a huge surprise success, and many other Marvel movies have tried to capture the same blend of humor and emotional depth. The *Guardians* quickly became beloved characters, and their story—spanning three films and a holiday special—felt complete and moving. If the new *Supergirl* movie can connect with the Marvel universe, the DCU could see similar success. Hopefully, that happens!

James Gunn seems to favor ongoing storylines, and the first three DC Universe projects – *Creature Commandos*, *Superman*, and *Peacemaker* – demonstrate this. Because of this approach, *Supergirl* could have a significant impact on future stories in the DCU.

Fans will finally learn what happens with Supergirl when the movie comes out in theaters on June 26th, 2026. Until then, you can revisit all the connected films and shows on HBO Max.
