James Gunn Made a Peacemaker Deleted Scene DCU Canon After DC Told Him “You Can’t Do That”

During the sunniest and darkest moments, no allusion to DC characters would go unnoticed in the first season of “Peacemaker” (2022). Writer James Gunn skillfully incorporated references to various superheroes and villains from the DC universe through Chris Smith’s dialogues. He joked about Matter-Eater Lad, Doll Man, and Kite-Man, made scandalous remarks about Superman and Aquaman, and even targeted Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Green Arrow by calling the latter a ‘brony’. However, one mention of a Justice League member was ultimately left out in the editing process.

In this rewording: The original scene featuring Jason Momoa’s Aquaman making a reference to the rumors about him sleeping with the fishes (metaphorically) has been altered in the “previously on the DCU” recap for season 2. Instead, Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl dismisses Peacemaker as a meathead, and Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern Guy Gardner expresses his dislike of him, adding that Aquaman spreads rumors about him being a ‘puke freak’.

In the revised recap, Peacemaker shows his true nature by making humorous comments. For instance, in a conversation with Jennifer Holland’s character Emilia Harcourt, he jokes about his strong gag reflex, sharing an amusing anecdote about vomiting on Green Lantern and feeling sick from riding a green magical carpet, which surprisingly delighted the Green Lantern.

In the “Peacemaker: The Official Podcast”, it was disclosed that a Green Lantern reference, initially intended for Season 1, was later utilized for the Justice Gang’s appearance in Season 2. James Gunn clarified, “As we’ve discussed before, certain elements are considered canonical in the DC Universe, while others from Season 1 are not. One of the major changes was that the Justice League initially appeared, but were eventually removed from the show, at least for the ‘previously in the DCU.'”

He noted that there isn’t a Justice League in existence as of now. He also shared an amusing tidbit from season 1, a scene which was ultimately removed due to its lengthy duration. Initially, they found it humorous, but were eventually compelled to cut it because it extended for quite some time. This scene featured Cena saying lines that weren’t originally scripted, and as a result, Guy Gardner developed a dislike for Peacemaker.

Gunn and Safran, producers for both ‘Peacemaker’ and ‘The Suicide Squad’, won’t step into the leadership role at DC Films until later in 2022. Instead, they will be named co-chairmen and CEOs of a new DC Studios division under Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022.

Earlier, the filmmaker disclosed that the previous management of DC Films had expressed disapproval towards Chris using the term “wuss” to describe Batman, as he didn’t kill his gang of villains.

In 2022, James Gunn stated to The Hollywood Reporter, “But he (a certain person) criticizes other superheroes for their questionable actions that are far more problematic than labeling Batman as less than admirable. Interestingly, this is the only hero he has a valid point about; otherwise, he’s simply propagating rumors and internet gossip about everyone else.

Even though there was some resistance, Gunn stated that the DC executives were fantastic and gave him the freedom to execute his ideas as he saw fit by the day’s end.
