In the developing DC film universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran, several significant characters have been confirmed, such as Superman, Supergirl, Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Lobo, and others. The character of Batman remains uncast at this point, but fan suggestions like Alan Ritchson (from the Reacher series) are generating a lot of interest due to their potential fit for the role. When asked about such proposals, James Gunn seems to indicate that there could be some merit to these ideas, even if it’s not necessarily for the Batman character directly.
As a dedicated cinephile, I often find myself daydreaming about potential castings in upcoming films. In a recent interview on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, James Gunn was asked if he had thought about casting for Batman, to which he replied negatively. When fans suggest someone like Alan Ritchson for the role, my thoughts are, “I am a huge fan of Alan Ritchson, both as an actor and as an individual. For now, let’s just stay tuned to see what unfolds.
Gunn’s prolonged silence when responding to the question suggests there may have been talks about Ritchson joining the new DC Universe. While this doesn’t guarantee he’ll play Batman, it also doesn’t exclude the possibility.
When asked if he considers setting apart his Batman from past portrayals, including the one with Robert Pattinson, Gunn replied, “Of course, there are people I sometimes ponder over, but let’s wait for the script. It’s not the most advanced part yet. We have other projects that are more developed.
Regarding Ritchson, he himself has addressed this matter explicitly, referring to when Gunn stated on Twitter that Ritchson wasn’t cast as Batman. However, Ritchson also mentioned that the casting rumors persistently refuse to fade away, and moreover, he wouldn’t hesitate for a moment if given the opportunity to play Batman.
Ritchson expressed to Wired that he finds it astonishing how the rumor about Batman’s popularity persists, despite James Gunn’s clear denial on Twitter that he will play the role. He is frequently asked if he’ll be Batman and his answer is a resounding yes, even for free. In fact, he’d gladly put on the Batman suit.” To add some flair, Ritchson also demonstrated his best Batman voice.
In simpler terms, James Gunn has mentioned that besides focusing on Superman, his main concerns are finalizing the scripts for both Batman and Wonder Woman. He expressed that Batman is a significant challenge for him in the DC universe, and he’s collaborating with the Batman writer to ensure it’s done well, as both characters hold great importance to DC Comics.
