In January 2023, James Gunn, one of the co-CEOs at DC Studios, unveiled the initial schedule for the DC Universe (DCU). This slate consisted of ten projects – five movies and five TV shows, scheduled to release between then and 2024. Among these was a series centered around the character Amanda Waller, played by the talented Viola Davis. Originally planned for release towards the end of 2024, production on this series was temporarily halted due to the Hollywood strikes in 2023. As a result, there haven’t been any significant updates about the show since its delay, causing some fans to worry that it may have been scrapped or overlooked.
James Gunn alleviated concerns about the future of Waller, addressing a user’s question about its status. In a simple yet reassuring statement, he said “Yes”, without providing further details like a possible release date or casting announcements. Details regarding the release window and additional cast members for Waller remain scarce at this point; currently, there is no announced release date, and only Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Steve Agee as John Economos, Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, and Frank Grillo reprising his role of Rick Flag Sr. are confirmed to be part of the series’ core cast in the DCU.
Moreover, Davis made a brief appearance in Season 1 of “Peacemaker,” which is considered part of the DC Universe (except for the presence of the Justice League). Later on, the actress reappeared on The Blue Brand, lending her voice to Amanda Waller in the 2024 animated series “Creature Commandos.” Over four out of the seven episodes, she used her vocal talents.
As a cinephile, I’ve learned that Waller is slated to debut at an unspecified date on the streaming platform, HBO Max, which belongs to Warner Bros.
Where Could Amanda Waller Show Up Next?
As a devoted cinephile, I’m eagerly awaiting the release of “Superman” in January 2024. Back in March 2023, James Gunn shared on Threads that Amanda Waller won’t be part of the film. However, considering the post was published well before filming began, there’s always a chance that things could have shifted. After “Superman,” Waller’s future seems uncertain.
From what we know from the marketing for “Superman,” it appears that ARGUS is now under the leadership of Rick Flag Sr. The motive behind this power transition will be unveiled in Season 2 of “Peacemaker,” as per Gunn.
In various new paths, character Waller might venture as she continues to explore storylines from previous installments. If Waller makes her appearance in late 2026 or 2027, there will be a handful of DCU projects prior to that, such as Lanterns, Supergirl, and perhaps Clayface. Given the vast scope of her character, it’s plausible to see Amanda Waller appearing in any one of those upcoming projects. Notably, Clayface was seen in Creature Commandos, which might create a connection between a potential Waller and Clayface film.
Regardless, it’s clear that Amanda Waller is set for a significant role in her own upcoming DC Universe series, and with Viola Davis portraying her, the stories will undoubtedly be enhanced by Davis’ powerful and insightful acting abilities. It appears that Davis is eager to start working on the show, as she quickly shared on social media, “Really exciting news! Can’t wait to take on ‘The Wall.'” Let’s hope that opportunity arrives soon for her.
