Adapting comic books into movies doesn’t mean a faithful, word-for-word reproduction of the original stories. Instead, creative freedom allows for unique interpretations and updates to familiar ideas and characters. The DC Universe, for example, has seen changes in James Gunn‘s “Superman” production. Unlike the comics, Jor-El harbors a secret plan to conquer Earth, Krypto behaves mischievously, and the Justice League is formed differently. A notable alteration by Gunn is the introduction of ARGUS; while it was initially designed to unite superhumans in the comics, its purpose has been redefined in this new narrative context.
It’s not the first time this has been changed,” he said. “In the DC Universe, these organizations aren’t so much uniting superheroes as they are trying to control them instead.
What James Gunn’s ARGUS Change Means for the DCU
Fans have already witnessed ARGUS’ role in managing superheroes, as seen when Rick Flag Sr., ARGUS’ director, met with Lex Luthor to strategize about potential Superman threats. Later, after the truth of Jor-El’s full message was disclosed, Flag apprehended Superman. Prior to the Daily Planet unveiling Luthor’s deceitful scheme to seize land from Jarhanpur, ARGUS had been collaborating with Luthor and his PlanetWatch team to safeguard Earth from Kryptonians.
The character known as Peacemaker is seen using his resources to track Christopher Smith, who unfortunately was the cause of Rick Flag Sr.’s son’s death. ARGUS has been observing Peacemaker due to an unusual occurrence at his home that appears to be another dimension rift, potentially causing worldwide destruction. During the Corto Maltese operation, ARGUS wasn’t focused on bringing together superheroes for a noble cause, but rather using criminals for risky missions under Task Force X. Amanda Waller closely monitored the Suicide Squad and was ready to detonate bombs implanted in their heads if needed.
In the DCU, the shift towards ARGUS reveals the complex relationship between the organization and metahumans. Unlike allies such as Superman and the Justice League, ARGUS primarily functions to monitor super-powered individuals and prevent any potential misuse of their abilities. Given the centuries-old presence of metahumans in the DCU, it’s no surprise that a governing body like ARGUS has been established. As stated in Superman, metahumans have been around for quite some time, thus necessitating a government agency to manage them. ARGUS’ mission may vary based on the situation, as it is not designed to unite superheroes. In the event of a metahuman causing chaos, ARGUS takes appropriate action to apprehend them.
Looking forward to observing how ARGUS’ character unfolds as the DC Universe progresses further. Throughout Season 2 of Peacemaker, one can expect ARGUS to play a significant part, given its involvement in Flag’s ongoing feud with Smith and his investigation into the mysterious dimensional gates found in Peacemaker’s house. The role of ARGUS may change from production to production based on story requirements. In Peacemaker, it appears more as an adversary, closely monitoring Smith and poised to act against him at any moment. On the other hand, in James Gunn’s planned Superman sequel, ARGUS might assist Superman in his efforts to protect the world from a looming catastrophe. One intriguing aspect of ARGUS is its adaptability, which offers filmmakers the freedom to utilize it as they see fit.
