James Gunn Reveals Fan-Favorite Villain’s Fate in the DCU After Apparent Death

In the latest episode of the Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, director James Gunn confirmed the current status of a lesser-known DC Universe villain, Kite Man. Although Kite Man wasn’t explicitly mentioned in Season 1 of Peacemaker, there was a newspaper article showing Peacemaker (John Cena) defeating him. This led fans to question if Kite Man had met his end or would return to the DCU. Gunn clarified that Peacemaker did not use lethal force against Kite Man in this instance, and the episode seems to support this claim. However, Gunn didn’t reveal whether or when we might see Kite Man again.

Gunn mentioned, ‘Even though Peacemaker supposedly defeated Kite Man, I don’t believe it means he’s dead.’ He added, ‘I don’t think it means he was killed, merely incapacitated. I assume he was arrested and is now in prison. So, he’s still alive and well. It’s possible we could see Kite Man again.’

Presently, the Peacemaker podcast primarily features discussions about Season 1 of the series, with Gunn providing insights on elements no longer part of the DC Universe canon, and emphasizing significant points. Recently, a mention of Kite Man led one of the co-hosts to declare this event as “canon,” which is quite entertaining given that an obscure character like Kite Man now holds a canonical position in the DCU before more popular figures such as Batman. However, many fans enjoy Gunn’s deep dives into these lesser-known characters.

Initially appearing in a Batman comic book back in 1960, Kite Man started off as a minor, relatively unknown criminal. Often employed by more sinister supervillains as bait, he wasn’t particularly notable. However, recent popularity has surged for Kite Man due to his role in the Harley Quinn animated series, where he received some humorous dialogue and a significant storyline. It’s important to note that Harley Quinn is not part of the official DC Universe continuity, so his portrayal in this show doesn’t affect his character within the broader DCU context.

To date, the DC Universe comprises primarily of the “Creature Commandos” and “Superman.” The upcoming Season 2 of “Peacemaker” will also fall under this continuity, but Gunn is carefully selecting which elements from the storyline to carry forward. At present, the universe presents a flexible backdrop, given that metahumans are deeply ingrained with a rich history and seamless integration into daily life. How an ordinary individual who excels in hang-gliding fits into this world remains to be explored.

The second season of “Peacemaker” debuts on August 21st on HBO Max. You can currently stream the first season and also “Creature Commandos” on there. Additionally, “Peacemaker: The Official Podcast” is accessible on various podcast platforms right now.
