Leading up to the season finale of *Peacemaker*, James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, hinted that the episode would be important for the upcoming film, *Man of Tomorrow*. Now that the finale, “Full Nelson,” has aired, it’s clear what he meant. The episode introduces Salvation, an alien planet that the U.S. government is using as a prison for people with superpowers. The season ends with Rick Flag Sr. sending Peacemaker (Christopher Smith) to Salvation as revenge, leaving him stranded on this strange and dangerous world. Salvation will be a key location throughout the first major storyline in the new DC Universe, and while *Man of Tomorrow* will explore it further, it won’t reveal everything fans are wondering about.
In an interview with *Rolling Stone*, James Gunn confirmed that the fate of Peacemaker won’t be immediately revealed after the events of “Full Nelson.” However, he did share that the secret, possibly illegal, dimensional prison created by the military, Rick Flag, and others will play a significant role in future DC Universe stories. This won’t be a minor detail like Arkham Asylum; it’s central to an ongoing conflict between the government and metahumans.
The DCU Needs to Address What Happened to Peacemaker
Okay, so the second season of *Peacemaker* ended with a pretty big surprise, but unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we’re getting a Season 3. Instead of continuing Peacemaker’s story directly, the storylines introduced in the show will be woven into other projects within the new DC Universe. A lot of viewers, myself included, figured John Cena might pop up in *Man of Tomorrow* – maybe even just a quick cameo to tie up Peacemaker’s loose ends after that post-credit scene. But it doesn’t sound like that’s going to happen. And honestly, that’s not surprising coming from James Gunn. He’s always been super upfront with fans, like when he told us David Corenswet wouldn’t be appearing on *Peacemaker*. It helped manage expectations then, and it feels like he’s doing the same now. When Gunn says something, you can pretty much believe it’s the truth.
James Gunn has confirmed that Peacemaker is a significant character within the broader DC Universe storyline, meaning Christopher Smith won’t be forgotten. The big question now is when we’ll see him reappear. One possibility is the upcoming series *Lanterns*, which Gunn says is crucial for setting up future events while still telling its own story. It remains to be seen if *Lanterns* will explore the storyline involving the Salvation group, or if it will introduce another major plot point. If Peacemaker’s story isn’t continued in *Lanterns*, it’s unlikely we’ll hear anything about him for a while. *Supergirl* and *Clayface* don’t seem like likely places for his return, at least not initially.
It’s likely we’ll see Peacemaker again in a future project, though nothing’s been confirmed yet. With his friends now in charge of the Checkmate agency, a new series focusing on them and the mystery of Peacemaker’s disappearance is possible. Checkmate will continue to be a part of the DC Universe, much like ARGUS, suggesting James Gunn has further plans for those characters. Currently, DC Studios hasn’t announced any films beyond 2027, leaving much of their schedule uncertain. As Gunn becomes ready to share more news about upcoming movies and shows, fans will get a clearer picture of where Peacemaker might appear.
Hopefully, we’ll find out about Peacemaker’s future soon. Leaving fans wondering what happens next would only add to the disappointment some felt with the Season 1 finale. It would be a shame if Peacemaker got sidelined as the big picture for the DC Universe becomes clearer – we’ve seen similar storylines fizzle out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Luckily, James Gunn seems genuinely passionate about Peacemaker and that part of the DCU, so it’s likely he won’t let the character fade away.
