James Gunn Reveals One Part of Peacemaker Isn’t Confirmed DCU Canon (Yet)

Wow, what a surprise, Batman! The initial season of James Gunn‘s Peacemaker made references to various members of the Justice League such as Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. It even mentioned Batman’s group of supervillains, including the Joker, the Riddler, and Mad Hatter. Throughout its eight episodes, characters often brought up familiar faces like Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), Weasel (Sean Gunn), and Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman). However, the series also referenced characters that haven’t yet been introduced in the DC Extended Universe (or the newly rebooted DC Universe).

Instead of mentioning the less known characters such as the Doll Man, Matter-Eater Lad from the Legion of Super-Heroes, Kite-Man, and Bat-Mite, it appears that the “two-foot-tall interdimensional fanboy who’s a huge Batman fan” disclosed by John Economos (Steve Agee) in the first season episode “Best Friends For Never,” does not align with the revised DC Universe.

According to Gunn, who wrote and directed the episode, everything in it is considered canon, except perhaps Bat-Mite. He’s a character Gunn really likes, but he can’t guarantee that Bat-Mite exists in reality.

The DC Studios co-chief described him as an exceptional character from the comics, hailing from the Fifth Dimension and resembling a chilling imp. He’s often seen wearing a small Batman suit, but it’s too big for him, making his ears bend awkwardly. This imp has slim legs and a plump torso, and he holds Batman in high regard. His goal is to orchestrate extraordinary situations to demonstrate Batman’s heroism, but these scenarios are more like nightmares.

In the fresh DC Universe, though Bat-Mite has not appeared as of now, characters in the Gunn-written “Creature Commandos” and “Superman” have referenced the dimension-altering beings known as Imps. The “Creature Commandos” made mention of “Mites”, while “Superman” depicted a scene where Maxwell Lord’s Justice Group, consisting of Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Green Lantern Guy Gardner, saved Metropolis from an “interdimensional Imp.

Apart from Bat-Mite, the notoriously mischievous trickster known as Mr. Mxyzptlk often confronts Superman. This character is famous for his magical shenanigans.

Or more casually:

Besides Bat-Mite, there’s this troublemaking guy called Mr. Mxyzptlk who loves to give Superman a hard time. He has a knack for magic tricks.

In August 21st, HBO Max will debut the second season of the series “Peacemaker,” featuring returning stars like John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick. Additionally, new faces joining the cast include Frank Grillo, David Denman, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows.
