Currently playing in theaters, Superman is revving up the DC Universe for even greater heights, with future projects set to capitalize on this success in diverse manners. The upcoming lineup features Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface, all gearing up to make a significant impact on the silver screen over the next few years. During a recent conversation between Josh Horowitz and Superman’s director, James Gunn, they delved into various projects, but Gunn emphasized one particular project that serves as a direct sequel to Superman.
I recently tuned into the Happy Sad Confused podcast where Horowitz and Gunn were chatting about various projects they’re working on. In the conversation, they unveiled that Supergirl has been fully filmed, and then Gunn hinted at another project – none other than Peacemaker season 2! This upcoming season promises to delve into events connected to Superman, with a cast of familiar faces returning from his initial appearance.
As a movie enthusiast, let me share my excitement about Peacemaker 2. James Gunn himself has emphasized that this sequel is not to be missed, serving as a direct continuation of the Superman saga. You’ll find familiar faces like Rick Flag, Hawkgirl, Maxwell Lord, and even Guy Gardner in the mix. What makes it stand out? It’s an adult-oriented storyline, promising a very R-rated experience that takes the DC Universe in a bold new direction.
Viewers have caught brief glimpses of Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl in the series, and now we learn there are additional appearances to anticipate. One of these could be the character that Gunn hinted at towards the end of the season, which, if it turns out to be Superman as some speculate, would further strengthen the direct sequel link and create quite a powerful duo between Superman and Peacemaker.
What We Know So Far
Though some aspects of Peacemaker season 2 are still shrouded in secrecy, we do have significant insights. In a prior interview, Gunn hinted that Peacemaker will continue a few years after the conclusion of season 1. Despite Peacemaker’s successful world-saving mission, he hasn’t exactly become a superstar in the hero community yet.
In the second season, Peacemaker enters with the understanding that he’s saved the world from the Butterflies, as shared by Gunn with EW. Believing himself to be a major star and a true superhero, we find him seeking membership within the Superman-associated superhero group at the start of episode 1. However, his application is met with nothing but ridicule throughout the meeting, leaving him unserious in their eyes.
He’s still viewed as a joke by the other metahumans, so he begins this season in a difficult situation, according to Gunn. Similarly, all our heroes, including the 11th Street kids, are starting off on a tough note, except for Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), who always appears unphased by everything.
To address the delay in the release of season 2, Gunn had to postpone it as he was busy with other projects. After completing work on Peacemaker, he moved on to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Then, when he was about to return to Peacemaker, he got offered the position as head of DC Studios. Immediately after accepting this job, he contacted Marvel’s Kevin Feige to inform him about his new role at DC, and then reached out to John Cena to discuss delaying Peacemaker to focus on Superman first.
After wrapping up the script for Superman, I moved on to crafting Season 2 of Peacemaker, Gunn explained. It might appear to others as if there was a significant gap, but for me, the time flew by swiftly due to all the various projects I tackled in between.
