James Gunn Reveals the Forgotten Marvel Movie That Inspired DC’s Peacemaker

Title Character: The Peacekeeper – Hero, Soldier, Vigilante. Copycat? In James Gunn‘s Peacemaker, a spin-off from The Suicide Squad, we revisit Chris Smith, the jingoistic mercenary, after he murdered Colonel Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) to safeguard U.S. government secrets during a Task Force X mission in Corto Maltese. As Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller put it, “His father was a soldier who taught his son how to kill from the moment he was born.” The chrome-headed, peace-loving marksman, imprisoned in Belle Reve, found an opportunity for redemption when Waller’s black ops team recruited him for special assignments: eliminate parasitic aliens and protect Earth from invasion as part of Project Butterfly.

As it happens, a different helmeted character served as inspiration for ‘Peacemaker’: the motorcyclist Steve Rogers (played by Reb Brown), hailing from the 1979 television film titled ‘Captain America’.

It seems that during “The Suicide Squad”, I mentioned to producer Peter Safran something along the lines of: ‘Remember that old “Captain America” TV series from the 70s? It’d be awesome if Peacemaker was part of a twisted reboot of that show. Imagine a ’70s-style show complete with the Peacecycle and all its accessories.’ As it turns out, when they later asked me if I wanted to create one of the “Suicide Squad” characters for TV, they inquired, ‘Which character would you prefer to work on?'” This is from James Gunn’s first episode of “Peacemaker: The Official Podcast with James Gunn”.

“And I remember Peter going, ‘It’s Peacemaker, right?’” Gunn continued. “And I was like, ‘Yes!’”

The 1979 movie “Captain America” presented Marvel’s iconic character as Steve Rogers, a skilled motorcycle racer and motocross expert, whose father was affectionately known as “Captain America.” Steve’s late father created and refined FLAG (Full Latent Ability Gain), a powerful hormone that turned the former Marine into the winged avenger. In this version, Captain America used a transparent shield and rode his red, white, and blue motorcycle named the Capcycle.

In their roles as co-chairmen and joint CEOs of DC Studios alongside Safran, Gunn also collaborates on the HBO Max ‘Peacemaker’ podcast together with series stars Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee.

In the second season of “Peacemaker”, characters including Christopher Smith played by John Cena, Emilia Harcourt (portrayed by Jennifer Holland), tech specialist John Economos (played by Chukwudi Iwuji), newcomer Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), and the masked assassin Vigilante (Freddie Stroma) reappear. According to the show’s summary, Peacemaker stumbles upon an alternate reality that embodies everything he yearns for in life. However, this revelation compels him to confront his painful past and assume control of his destiny.

Peacemaker returns with the season 2 premiere August 21 on HBO Max.
