From the beginning, James Gunn and Peter Safran planned to launch the DC Universe with Superman, but a larger story was always in development. When they first announced the initial DCU projects, a new Batman movie called The Brave and the Bold was included, promising to introduce the full Bat-family on screen. However, there’s a complication: Matt Reeves’ successful 2021 film The Batman already had a sequel and a spin-off series in the works before Gunn took charge at DC Studios. Because of this, the DCU’s Batman story appears to have been delayed.
Even though it’s been uncertain, the DC Universe is still hinting at Batman’s arrival. While Batman briefly appeared in last year’s animated series, Creature Commandos, it’s unknown how much of that story will connect to future films. Superman also included a small tease about Batman and Gotham City’s role in the DCU. Now, James Gunn has shared some details on social media about how Batman will fit into the DCU, and what’s most important for the character’s future.
James Gunn Reveals Three Most Important Things for DCU’s Batman
A DC fan on Threads asked James Gunn about the upcoming Batman movie, specifically hoping to see the character’s iconic white eyes on his mask – a detail rarely shown on film, appearing briefly only in The Dark Knight and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Gunn acknowledged this is a popular request, and used it as an example to explain what details are truly important for the new DC Universe’s version of Batman.
Fans have been asking for a blue and grey color scheme, yellow around the character, and white eyes, but I believe the character’s personality, the script, and the actor portraying him are more important. While people are vocal about what they want, even the most popular request – the blue and grey – has an equal number of detractors. The same goes for the other frequently mentioned ideas. Ultimately, the choices need to serve the story and the film itself.
James Gunn has already developed a Superman movie, with another one planned, but he’s been discussing Batman a lot online. He’s mentioned that while he has some actors in mind for the role, his final choice could change after seeing how they perform in a screen test.
James Gunn’s comments on the direction for Batman in the DC Universe reinforce why he’s an excellent choice to lead DC Studios. While it’s important to consider how Batman looks on screen, Gunn rightly points out that a great actor and a compelling story are crucial. Given the history of Batman films, the bar is already set high, and Gunn’s own high standards suggest he’s up to the challenge.
Since becoming head of DC Studios, James Gunn has consistently emphasized that a movie won’t move forward unless the script is excellent. He even mentioned canceling a nearly-finished project at Warner Bros. because the writing wasn’t good enough. While fans are eager to see Batman appear in the DC Universe, they can be confident that when the character finally arrives on screen, it will be the best possible version.
