James Gunn recently explained a commonly misunderstood scene from Guardians of the Galaxy. The scene features Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Kraglin (Sean Gunn) confronting the Broker (Christopher Fairbank), demanding information about the Orb and the Power Stone it holds. When the Broker refuses to cooperate, Yondu starts speaking nonsense and talking over him, while Kraglin struggles to hide his amusement.
I saw this rumor going around on Threads that Michael Rooker, playing Yondu, ad-libbed something that made Sean Gunn, as Kraglin, accidentally break character during that scene. But James Gunn just cleared things up! He said everything – Yondu’s teasing and Kraglin’s reaction – was actually written in the script. So it wasn’t an accident at all!
Gunn mentions the close-up shot of Kraglin was filmed later, using a blue screen, but thankfully, the actor didn’t have to change how he was portraying the character. He explains this is typical of the extra filming often done for movies, which fans sometimes hear about. You can read his complete statement below.

James Gunn, the director behind popular superhero films and now a key figure in the DC Universe, is well-known for using social media to correct misinformation. He’s been doing this for years—even going back to when the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie came out over a decade ago in 2014.
Gunn’s explanation not only corrects misunderstandings about this particular scene, but also sheds light on common myths about filmmaking. People often believe actors make up important lines on the spot, or that reshoots signal trouble with a production. However, reshoots are actually a standard part of the movie and TV-making process after filming has mostly wrapped up.
James Gunn connects with fans by openly sharing insights into his work, from discussing past projects like Guardians of the Galaxy to hinting at future plans for the DC Universe.
As a huge DC fan, I’m really excited about what James Gunn is building, and it sounds like he’s especially focused on the Superman sequel, currently called Man of Tomorrow. From what I understand, the story’s going to be interesting – Superman, played by David Corenswet, and Lex Luthor, with Nicholas Hoult taking on the role, will actually have to work together when they face off against Brainiac, who Lars Eidinger is playing. It’s a cool twist to see those two traditionally at odds needing to team up!
Across the DC Universe, actors Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn have continued to collaborate with James Gunn. Rooker lends his voice to a robot belonging to Superman and appears as Red St. Wild in the second season of Peacemaker. Sean Gunn plays Maxwell Lord in Peacemaker season 2, and also voices GI Robot and Weasel in Creature Commandos.
