In a recent interview, James Gunn hinted that Lois Lane could acquire superpowers within the DC Universe. Known for her occasional powers in the comics, Lois Lane, portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan in Gunn’s upcoming Superman reboot, typically does not possess such abilities on screen. Instead, in the new movie, Lois is often the human lead character alongside Superman, serving as a determined journalist and romantic interest to the Man of Steel.
In most Superman movies, Lois is usually assigned practical tasks. However, Brosnahan’s character ventured into uncharted territory for the character, having the chance to explore more fantastical elements, such as piloting a spacecraft-like vessel called the T-sphere ship belonging to Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi).
In a conversation with Wired, James Gunn, the Superman director and DC Studios co-CEO, pondered over the prospect of Lois Lane developing superpowers within the DC Universe.
When queried if he’d ever considered giving the character superpowers in the new cinematic comic book universe, Gunn hinted playfully, “She already possesses superpowers in the comics right now,” and every time he witnesses her in her empowered state, he “contemplates it.”
In the current comic books, you could encounter her. She possesses supernatural abilities within these comics at this very moment. It often crosses my mind whenever I observe her exhibiting these powers.
Brosnahan herself is enthusiastic about the concept of being part of the upcoming DC on-screen franchise, expressing during the same interview that fans should encourage James Gunn by saying, “Express your desire for a sequel featuring Lois Lane flying.
As a movie enthusiast, let me express it this way: “Indeed, she does! Oh, how she does! In the film ‘All-Star Superman,’ she transforms into Superwoman for a single day on her birthday. And in other comic books, she acquires powers…Pass along my message to James, I’d love to witness a sequel featuring Lois Lane soaring through the skies.
Throughout various stages of her life, Lois Lane has acquired superpowers on multiple occasions, one of which was depicted in the beloved comic book tale “All-Star Superman“. In this narrative, Gunn’s Superman film draws significant inspiration from, Lois is bestowed with powers akin to Superman’s for a single day as a birthday gift. However, she eventually returns to her normal human state afterwards.
Normally, when a character acquires powers, they tend to be temporary. For instance, Lois Lane has taken on various superhero aliases during her storyline, such as Superwoman and Red Tornado from another universe (an artificial being created by the government with the consciousness of a deceased Lois from Earth 2).
Currently, the movie titled “Superman” is being shown in cinemas worldwide, offering viewers a fresh perspective of Gunn’s interpretation within the universe of DC Comics. The cast includes Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane, David Corenswet as Superman, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The release of “Superman” has set the DCU in motion (following the animated “Creature Commandos” series), with titles such as “Peacemaker”, “Lanterns”, and “Supergirl” expected over the coming year or so.
Will Lois Lane Get Powers in the DCU?
It’s possible that James Gunn may have considered giving Lois Lane powers in the DCU, but this doesn’t guarantee it will occur right away or even at all.
The franchise is still quite fresh, and incorporating something novel at this stage seems risky, despite the fact that Gunn’s new interconnected universe has a more comic-book feel than anything we’ve seen so far. Yet, there could be a single approach that might make it successful.
James Gunn has frequently discussed how the comic series “All-Star Superman” by Tom King greatly influenced his upcoming “Superman” movie. Although he incorporated numerous aspects from this story, he chose not to address the scene where Lois Lane gains powers, which occurs around the middle of the original plot.
In that book, Lois is granted powers for her birthday and becomes Superwoman for just a day.
It’s buzzing that we might see a sequel to Superman 2. This could be an exciting opportunity to incorporate elements from the popular comic book series All-Star Superman, extending references from this acclaimed run, even after the initial Superman movie has ended its run.
