It might seem like James Gunn‘s upcoming Superman movie serves as the foundation for an entirely new DC Universe, suggesting that Superman is the focal point of this franchise. However, in a recent interview, Gunn hinted that the primary character of the DCU will not be Superman, and it’s someone fans wouldn’t readily expect. Moreover, Gunn playfully dropped a clue about who the main focus of the DCU might be; see if you can figure it out!
In a chat with James Gunn, Screen Rant’s Ash Crossan discussed the future of the DCU and the role of Superman. During their conversation, there was a theory floating around that Krypto the super-dog, appearing in Superman and connecting to Supergirl, might serve as the link between DCU films, similar to how Nick Fury connected the Marvel Cinematic Universe early on. However, Gunn dismissed this idea, but hinted at an unforeseen character who will become the centerpiece of the franchise: “Indeed, it’s not Krypto’s tale. I can tell you that I do know whose story it is. And it’s likely someone no one would ever anticipate.
Gunn clarified further about the narrative in the DCU’s initial storyline, “Gods and Monsters,” stating that there indeed is a continuous thread running through it. He hinted that a character we are already acquainted with will be following this narrative path. Additionally, he suggested that this continuity leads to a significant franchise event, an unexpected one at that, which might become clearer after watching the next season of “Peacemaker.
The latest trailer for “Peacemaker” Season 2 reveals that John Cena’s character, Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, is going on a portal journey, moving from the old DC Extended Universe (DCEU) to this new DC Universe (DCU). In the upcoming season, we’ll see if Peacemaker manages to infiltrate the DCU and potentially replace his own counterpart. If he does, it could lead to an intriguing interdimensional conflict, with characters like Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis) from the DCEU clashing with factions within the DCU, such as General Rick Flagg Sr. (Frank Grillo), who has been featured in the first two DCU projects (“Creature Commandos” animated series and “Superman”), and may not be happy to learn he had a son who was killed in another universe. This situation could make Peacemaker, Flagg Sr., and even Rick Flag Jr. (possibly played by Joel Kinnaman), key characters for the upcoming “Gods and Monsters” storyline.
As a movie aficionado, I must highlight the versatile talent of Sean Gunn, the director’s kin, who has graced both the DCEU and DCU realms with his presence. In “The Suicide Squad” and “Creature Commandos,” he embodied the cunning Weasel, while in “Superman,” he portrayed the DCU’s Maxwell Lord. Interestingly, Gunn is set to rejoin some of his Justice Gang comrades in the upcoming season 2 of “Peacemaker.” In the comic books, Maxwell Lord is often a complex character, serving as both a villain and a mastermind manipulator, so it will be intriguing to see how the DCU unfolds this character.
Hell, maybe its Eagly.
Currently, Superman is being shown in cinemas, while Season 2 of Peacemaker is scheduled to debut on HBO Max on August 21st.
