The design of Superman’s briefs has sparked much discussion, long before the appearance of DC Studios’ new Superman was unveiled. Interestingly, it seems that the use of trunks for Superman in the DC Universe might be subject to change – at least when it comes to other characters like Batman. The preference for Superman wearing or not wearing briefs has been a significant point of contention among fans, as the most recent on-screen portrayal of this DC hero notably did without them. In the past, director James Gunn expressed his concerns about this matter and even consulted Zack Snyder, the director of Man of Steel, but later announced that his version of Superman would indeed wear them.
During a conversation with ComicBook during the promotion for the upcoming release of the new Superman film, director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn stated that the fate of Superman’s trunks (or briefs) hasn’t been determined yet, but among all DC characters who wear similar attire in comic books, it’s most probable that Superman will retain his distinctive costume.
Gunn replied, “We haven’t made a decision yet about whether other characters might have trunks in the DCU. However, trunks are useful, so we’ll see how things unfold. I can’t say for certain, but it seems less likely that other characters would have trunks compared to Superman. Trunks are more iconic to Superman’s costume, I believe, than they are to Batman’s, even though he wore them frequently in the comics.
Superman Keeping His Trunks Makes Sense
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been following the conversation about bringing back Cede Trunks with ComicBook. In this discussion, James Gunn shared an interesting insight – Superman actor David Corenswet played a crucial role in deciding the direction we’d take. He said, “Initially, the debate was intense, but it cooled down. For a long time, I was firmly on the ‘no trunks’ side.”
Gunn continued, “Even Zack Snyder, when he was working on it, tried countless versions of trunks, just like we did. But I kept going back to ‘no trunks’, ‘no trunks’, ‘no trunks’. I thought, let’s keep trying trunks and see where it leads us.”
David Corenswet then said something that really resonated with me. It made me reconsider my stance on the issue. So, we decided to give it another shot and see what happens.
We tried on numerous variations, even testing with and without trunks, as Gunn explained. One point David made was that Superman should not instill fear in children. He’s an alien with extraordinary powers – he can shoot beams from his eyes and overturn trucks. Despite being an incredibly powerful being who could appear intimidating, he wants to be liked. His aim is to serve as a symbol of hope and positivity.
Delving deeper into the subject, Gunn disclosed that Superman’s character bears a hint of professional wrestling influence. He stated, “His attire resembles that of a professional wrestler, which serves to dispel fear instead of provoking it.” Gunn continued, “This idea struck me as significant. Pretending Superman’s costume lacks any playful aspect is absurd since he is a superhero. As the original one, he stands out with his bright colors, and that’s who he is. Ultimately, we all arrived at a consensus that the trunks would be part of his outfit.
Superman releases on July 11th.
