Dawn of the Dead begins streaming on Netflix in January 2026

Zack Snyder’s 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead will be available to stream on Netflix starting January 1, 2026. What’s on Netflix reports this brings the film, which was co-written by James Gunn, back to a major streaming service.

Ana, a nurse, was on her way home after a normal workday when her life changed forever. The next day, her husband was suddenly attacked by a neighbor who had turned into a zombie. She had to quickly escape as their neighborhood was overrun with the infected. Soon, she met a police officer named Kenneth Hall and a small group of other people who had also survived. They found shelter in a nearby mall, hoping it would be safe for a while. But as days turned into weeks, and more survivors arrived, they faced increasing danger and dwindling supplies.

Sarah Polley and Ving Rhames star in the film as Ana Clark and Sergeant Kenneth Hall, respectively. Jake Weber plays Michael Shaunessy, with Mekhi Phifer as Andre and Ty Burrell as Steve Markus, along with a supporting cast.

Rotten Tomatoes reports a 77% approval rating from 192 critics. Antonia Quirke of The Standard described the film as “ferocious, young, and exciting,” comparing it favorably to 28 Days Later but noting it lacks that film’s intense dread and the presence of Christopher Eccleston.

When it was released, Dawn of the Dead was well-received by critics and did very well in theaters, earning over $102 million worldwide, with more than $59 million of that coming from US theaters (according to Box Office Mojo).
