For over ten years, DC movies haven’t been consistent in quality. To fix this, Warner Bros. Discovery created DC Studios and brought in James Gunn and Peter Safran – both known for successful superhero projects – to build a connected universe. Their goal was to unify DC’s films, TV shows, cartoons, and games into one cohesive timeline. This seemed to put DC on solid ground, with projects like Creature Commandos, Superman, and Season 2 of Peacemaker suggesting a bright future. However, recent news that Warner Bros. Discovery is being sold has created uncertainty about Gunn and Safran’s long-term plans for the DC Universe.
When news of the sale broke, Paramount quickly became a leading contender to buy Warner Bros. Early reports worried fans, suggesting a complete overhaul of DC’s creative direction – essentially a second major reboot in a few years. Given the fanbase’s history with reboots and changing plans, this was understandably concerning. However, a recent report from Bloomberg offers a more positive outlook. According to the report, Paramount CEO David Ellison plans to keep the current creative team at Warner Bros., including James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios, to ensure the DC Universe they’re building continues as planned.
Can Paramount Be Trusted to Grant DC Studios Creative Freedom?

The news that Paramount isn’t planning immediate changes to its leadership is encouraging for the DC Universe, but promises made during company mergers aren’t always reliable. It’s still unclear what the future holds for DC Studios now that Paramount owns it, especially considering the company’s history of making questionable business choices. For example, Paramount recently faced criticism for how it handled changes to its late-night talk show lineup, which suggests potential disagreements over the creative direction of the DCU. James Gunn, both in his past projects and his vision for the new DCU, has consistently shown a willingness to address social and political issues directly. This could create problems if Paramount is hesitant to allow that kind of commentary in a universe that aims to be timely and reflect current culture.
The recent, complicated split between the studio and Taylor Sheridan – the driving force behind Paramount Plus’s biggest shows – is a major concern. Sheridan, who had a lot of creative freedom and consistently delivered popular hits, left due to disagreements with new management regarding budgets, artistic control, and what he felt were unnecessary political requirements for storylines. This loss of such a successful partnership shows a willingness to move away from established creators who don’t fit the new company’s direction, which is a troubling sign for DC Studios as it transitions under potential new ownership.
Any sale, including one to Paramount, always carries the possibility of future changes to the plan and creative direction. Even if everyone starts with good intentions, a new owner could create difficulties for those building the DCU, meaning the stability fans want might not last as long as expected.
