After the tremendous success of Superman, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, is excited about the future prospects. The latest release of Superman, which grossed an impressive $217 million globally in its opening weekend, represents a promising new beginning that Warner Bros. and DC had eagerly awaited for some time. Zaslav, who has been at the helm of Warner Bros. Discovery for more than three years, is pleased with his choice to recruit writer-director James Gunn and Peter Safran to oversee DC Studios.
In an interview with Variety, the CEO expressed his enthusiasm about seeing James Gunn’s vision unfold in Superman, and the positive reception it has received so far. David Zaslav stated, “Three years ago, I brought on board James Gunn and Peter Safran to revitalize and consolidate the creative direction of DC under a single leadership team. Their goal was to inject freshness and excitement into one of the most globally recognized storytelling franchises. Their dedication to preserving the legacy of the DC Universe while creating something new and captivating is truly inspiring.
Zaslav further elaborated on the upcoming projects from DC Studios. Among them is “Supergirl”, which has concluded its production, and “Clayface”, which recently cast its main actor and will be the studio’s next feature film. As we witnessed Superman flying high under James Gunn’s direction this weekend, it marks just the beginning. Over the coming year, DC Studios is set to debut the films “Supergirl” and “Clayface” in cinemas, as well as the series “Lanterns” on HBO Max. This is all part of a daring 10-year plan. The vision for DC is clear, the energy is tangible, and I can’t help but feel thrilled about what lies ahead.
As a movie critic, I find myself standing on the threshold of an exciting new chapter in the DC Universe, under the leadership of Gunn and Safran. This fresh beginning represents a clean slate for DC Studios, a much-needed reset following the divisive Snyder-verse that left both critics and fans divided. For Warner Bros. Discovery, this reimagined DC Universe is their response to Marvel Studios’ successful Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has held sway over the superhero genre for nearly a decade now.
In recent years, DC has enjoyed its share of triumphs – the successes of Aquaman and Wonder Woman are testament to that. However, there have also been missteps along the way, such as the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson-led Black Adam, which didn’t quite hit the mark. The new DC Universe promises to be a competitive force in the world of superhero cinema, aiming to captivate audiences with its unique blend of storytelling and visual spectacle.
Superman appears to be the ideal leader for the universe, as envisioned by DC Studios and their audience. The movie has garnered an impressive $122 million in its initial domestic run, although it fell short of 2022’s The Batman’s opening weekend earnings of $134 million. However, it significantly outperformed recent DC films. Preceding Superman were releases like Blue Beetle, The Flash, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. These movies underperformed, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom earning the highest total at only $440 million worldwide, a far cry from the first film’s massive global earnings of $1.15 billion.
DC’s work on their upcoming movie, “Supergirl,” has just come to an end, and they seem eager to continue with their next project, the “Clayface” film. Milly Alcock will lead in “Supergirl,” while Tom Rhys Harries has been chosen for the main role in “Clayface.” Additionally, the studio is keeping busy on television sets, as “Lanterns” is currently being made; this series features Kyle Chandler portraying Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre taking on the role of John Stewart.
Currently, you can only catch Superman on the big screen at your local movie theater. Next up in the DC Universe is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, scheduled to premiere in theaters on June 26, 2026. And mark your calendars for September 11, 2026, as that’s when we’ll be seeing Clayface on the silver screen.
