James Gunn’s DCU Needs To Commit to the Bravest & Boldest Batman Twist After Debunked Rumors

It’s still unclear what role Batman will play in the new DC Universe (DCU), and James Gunn needs to make a bold decision about the character, especially after recent rumors were proven false. As one of DC’s most popular heroes, fans expected Bruce Wayne to appear shortly after the release of Superman in 2025. However, there’s been very little information about when Batman will be introduced, and the different versions of Batman we’ve seen in movies only add to the confusion.

One of the most anticipated movies James Gunn announced for the new DC Universe was The Brave and the Bold, a Batman and Robin film. It was going to feature the DCU’s new Batman, directed by Andy Muschietti, who also directed The Flash. However, Gunn recently revealed that the script isn’t complete yet, which means the movie is likely still several years off. This creates a challenge for the DCU, as they now need to figure out another way to introduce the new Batman to audiences.

The DCU Shouldn’t Make A Batman Movie Until The Batman Trilogy Is Done

Because The Brave and the Bold is still in the early stages of planning, it would be best for the DC Universe to avoid releasing another Batman movie until Matt Reeves finishes his planned trilogy. The 2022 film The Batman was a critical and commercial success, often considered one of the best Batman films since The Dark Knight. A sequel was quickly greenlit, and The Batman: Part II is now set to come out on October 1, 2027.

Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman was so well-received that director Matt Reeves originally planned a three-film story arc, but fans are now hoping it will become part of the larger DC Universe. When The Batman first came out, it was designed as a separate story, not connected to the existing Joker movie or the broader DCEU. However, the film’s success has led to many online calls for the DCU to incorporate The Batman‘s world into its official storyline, meaning we’ll have to wait even longer for the trilogy to conclude after Part II is released.

There’s been a lot of discussion about whether the new DC Universe will include The Batman films, but currently, it looks like The Batman franchise will remain separate. The Brave and the Bold is still planned as its own project with a different Batman. This could lead to two separate Batman movie series being released simultaneously if the DCU makes a Batman film before The Batman: Part III. This could confuse viewers and potentially overexpose the character.

To avoid confusion, the DC Universe should probably hold off on its own Batman movie until Matt Reeves finishes The Batman trilogy. Although waiting until the 2030s to introduce Batman might seem like a long time, it’s the best way to ensure both versions of the character can stand on their own. Alternatively, the DCU could simply make The Batman universe part of its official story, allowing them to feature their own Batman sooner.

Batman Being Absent From The DCU Doesn’t Mean That Gotham Has To Be

As a huge DC fan, I know we’re all eager for a proper Batman movie, but it might be a while before that happens. Luckily, the DCU doesn’t have to ignore Gotham! Seeing Batman pop up briefly in shows like Creature Commandos—and they’ve already established he exists in this universe—is a smart way to keep the character alive. I’d love to see him make little cameos in other projects, almost like a shadowy figure in the background, building up the mystery until they’re finally ready to give him his own dedicated film. It’s a great way to tease his arrival and keep fans excited!

Plus, many other Batman-related characters could appear in the DCU. The extended “Bat-Family” – like Nightwing, Robin, and Batgirl – are all popular and aren’t connected to the world of The Batman movie. This means the DCU could easily create films centered around them, or even feature them in smaller roles in other DC projects, without causing any confusion.

Gotham is home to many of DC’s most famous villains, and they’re available to appear in other DC stories as well. Most Batman villains aren’t unique to him, meaning other DC characters could easily battle members of his rogues gallery. The recent appearance of White Rabbit in season 2 of Peacemaker demonstrates this perfectly, expanding Batman’s world even before he’s officially part of the DC Universe.
