James Gunn’s First Franchise Just Hit Free Streaming (And It’s Not a Marvel Movie)

James Gunn is now known for his work directing superhero films for Marvel and DC, but before that, he wrote the screenplay for a movie based on a popular cartoon. Those films are now available to stream on Tubi, offering fans a chance to see his early work.

Tubi began streaming both Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed on December 1st. These films were James Gunn’s first big projects for a major franchise – he wrote the screenplays, and Raja Gosnell directed. Based on the classic Scooby-Doo cartoon, the movies feature Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini as the Mystery, Inc. gang, with Neil Fanning voicing Scooby-Doo himself. The first film follows the group as they investigate a mystery at a spooky tropical resort, while the sequel sees them trying to protect a town from a wave of monsters from their past.

Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed Are Live-Action Movies Done Right

As a huge fan, I think the Scooby-Doo movies – especially the first two, Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed – are just fantastic. They really feel like the cartoon I grew up with! The actors were perfectly cast and truly brought the characters to life, capturing all their funny little quirks. Plus, the mysteries were so well-crafted – full of clever clues and misleading hints that kept me guessing until the very end. James Gunn’s writing and Raja Gosnell’s direction perfectly captured the show’s quirky energy, but they also added a lot of heart and humor. It’s just a really enjoyable experience!

James Gunn’s first attempts at making movies weren’t very well-received. While his initial film made a profit—earning $275 million on an $84 million budget—it wasn’t popular with critics or viewers. It received mostly negative reviews, with a 32% rating from critics and a 41% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel also struggled, failing to perform well at the box office with a worldwide gross of $181 million, and receiving even lower scores of 22% from critics and 42% from audiences.

Looking back, both Scooby-Doo movies have really found an audience over the past twenty years – people love them now for their fun, over-the-top silliness and that nostalgic feeling. But the second film didn’t do so well at the box office, and that pretty much killed any chance of a third live-action movie. Warner Bros. pulled the plug on Scooby-Doo 3 almost immediately, and honestly, the idea hasn’t resurfaced since.

Other Family Movies Now on Tubi

Tubi recently added a bunch of new family-friendly movies on December 1st, including favorites like Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed, The Angry Birds Movie, Little Rascals, The Secret Life of Pets 2, Stuart Little, and Stuart Little 2. They’re all available to stream for free, making Tubi a great choice for family movie night!
