
James Gunn’s Superman series returns to HBO Max next week, so now’s a good time to start watching if you haven’t already. The DC Universe has expanded a lot since the first DCU projects were announced. Even though not many have been released yet, each one has introduced some really interesting new heroes and villains.
Okay, so James Gunn and Peter Safran weren’t just talking when they said they had a decade-long plan for DC. After the mixed reactions to the previous DC movie universe, it’s incredibly refreshing to see such a comprehensive vision – one that isn’t just about the films, but also includes TV shows, animation, and even video games. Honestly, that’s exactly what the DCU needs to truly differentiate itself and move forward.
David Corenswet debuted as the new Superman in 2025, earning praise for his touching portrayal. Following the film’s success, DC is building a series of interconnected movies, starting with Supergirl starring Milly Alcock, set to release on June 26, 2026. James Gunn’s sequel, Superman: Man of Tomorrow, will continue the story on July 9, 2027.
DC is expanding its universe with two new shows. A live-action series about Jimmy Olsen is coming to HBO Max, and it will be a crime drama featuring characters from The Daily Planet, as well as the Flash villain Gorilla Grodd. On the animated side, a series of shorts called Krypto Saves the Day!, executive produced by James Gunn, premiered on August 13, 2025.
Krypto’s HBO Max Series Returns Soon
HBO Max has released three ‘Krypto’ animated shorts: ‘School Bus Scuffle,’ ‘Halloween Havoc,’ and ‘Package Pandemonium.’ James Gunn has stated that these shorts aren’t part of the main DC Universe storyline. Interestingly, they were released shortly after the new Superman movie starring David Corenswet, and Krypto’s appearance in the shorts matches his design in that film.
The animated shorts series is returning with a new installment, Coastal Catastrophe, launching on HBO Max on April 18th. The latest episode premiered on November 28, 2025. Although Superman—looking similar to David Corenswet’s version—makes an appearance, Krypto the Super Dog is the main character. In Coastal Catastrophe, Krypto has beachside adventures with Superman.
Why HBO Max’s Krypto Saves the Day Is Worth A Binge
The Superman spinoff on HBO Max, Krypto Saves the Day!, currently has just three short episodes. Because of its brief length – each episode is about 5 to 6 minutes long – DC fans can watch the entire series in under half an hour.
Okay, so Krypto Saves the Day! isn’t going to rewrite the DC Universe or anything – it’s not officially part of the main story, which is fine. But if you loved the vibe of the 2025 Superman movie, these shorts are exactly what you need for a fun, lighthearted DC experience. Honestly, it’s perfect for watching with kids – it’s just good, wholesome Superman fun the whole family can enjoy.
