James Gunn’s Instagram Follow: Wonder Woman Casting SHOCK?

In today’s digital age, just one Instagram follow can spark intense excitement among fanbases. This is precisely what occurred when DC Studios co-head James Gunn decided to follow the actress Adria Arjona on Instagram.

In a short span of time, there was widespread discussion about the possibility that James Gunn selected Arjona for the role of the new Wonder Woman.

Speculation vs. Facts

Fans excited about updates on DC’s revamped film universe viewed the move as potentially hinting at casting choices. Given that Gunn has been suggesting major alterations and new actors for renowned roles like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, it wasn’t unreasonable to speculate. However, in a recent chat with Extra, James Gunn clarified that this was not a hint about the casting process.

In a post on Instagram, Gunn commented that he follows Adria, but people quickly jumped to conclusions, thinking, “He’s just following her, so she must be Wonder Woman!” Gunn went on to say, “She would make a fantastic Wonder Woman,” but he clarified that they have been friends for seven years and he had followed her long before the recent interaction. People often misinterpret these actions, he added.

In his remarks, Gunn mentioned the movie “The Belko Experiment” from 2016, a production where Arjona played a secondary character.

Their professional relationship goes way back about ten years, and it seems more like a strong friendship rather than just a casting hint. However, his casual comment that Arjona “would make an excellent Wonder Woman” certainly stirred up more speculation, especially considering her growing popularity due to movies such as Hit Man and Andor.

What’s Actually Happening with Wonder Woman?

The ongoing storyline of Wonder Woman within the DC Universe is yet to be fully outlined. It was revealed back in a June 2025 exclusive for Entertainment Weekly, penned by James Gunn, that a new Wonder Woman movie is under active development and is currently being drafted.

Wonder Woman stands apart from the slow-paced yet progressing HBO Max prequel series titled ‘Paradise Lost’.

“We’re working on Wonder Woman,” Gunn said. “Wonder Woman’s being written right now.”

According to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman play significant roles in their upcoming franchise plan. Gunn concurred, stating that at least two of these iconic characters are already secured, while they’re currently negotiating the remaining two.

A New Era Still Being Built

As a movie critic, I must share the news that Gal Gadot, who brought Diana Prince to life in the previous DC film universe, is no longer involved. The script for her third solo adventure, which was slated under the guidance of director Patty Jenkins, was abandoned as part of the broader reboot initiative in 2022. In a recent interview, Jenkins revealed that DC Studios was “entrenched in modifications” and she found herself unable to make progress or drive anything forward at that particular moment.

Gunn and Peter Safran were recruited to map out a fresh trajectory, starting with Superman and extending to productions like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Although Wonder Woman holds significant importance, the main actress, director, and creative team have not been confirmed yet.

In other words, although Adria Arjona seems fitting for the role and the director appears to appreciate her, there’s currently no confirmation that she has been officially cast. At this point, it’s merely a speculation fueled by internet rumors and algorithms.
