James Gunn’s MCU/DCU Crossover Didn’t Work Out the First Time (But 1 Show Presents Another Oppurtunity)

A movie combining characters from DC and Marvel has never really taken off. In the early 2000s, studios preferred to launch individual heroes, giving them a series of three films if they were successful. Then, Marvel revolutionized the industry by demonstrating that a shared universe of interconnected movies could work, as long as it had strong leadership. Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ DC movies struggled, particularly with *Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice* and *Justice League*. Because Marvel was doing so well, collaborating with DC wouldn’t have been beneficial.

Things have changed a lot recently. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is working to regain its popularity after a couple of weaker phases, and the newly launched DC Universe is just getting started under the leadership of James Gunn, who used to work at Marvel Studios. Gunn is a long-term planner and often talks about the possibility of collaborating with Marvel on a big event. While his first attempt at this didn’t pan out, he shouldn’t give up, as one DCU show could really benefit from the exposure.

James Gunn Wanted a DCU/MCU Crossover in Peacemaker Season 2

Originally launched as part of the DCEU, *Peacemaker* has continued into the new DCU as if it always belonged there. The show’s upcoming second season follows Christopher Smith as he finds himself in an alternate reality where he has everything he’s ever wanted – a family, love, and recognition. However, this happiness is short-lived when he discovers he’s living in a world where the Nazis won World War II. Convinced he’s destined for unhappiness, Chris surrenders to A.R.G.U.S. and hands over the Quantum Unfolding Chamber to Rick Flag Sr., who sees it as a potentially groundbreaking device.

The season finale of *Peacemaker* centers around the A.R.G.U.S. team exploring different worlds within a strange, contained universe, hoping to find a planet they can live on. The episode built up anticipation for a big reveal – perhaps a major villain – that could significantly impact the DC Universe. However, the team ultimately finds the world known as “Salvation,” and the story continues without that major shake-up. Originally, though, showrunner James Gunn had discussed a cameo appearance by Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, imagining him on the other side of one of those doorways. While that didn’t happen, Gunn might want to keep Reynolds’ number, as his Marvel character would be a better fit for another DC show.

A Long-Gestating DCU Project Could Benefit From a Deadpool Appearance

Okay, so everyone’s been saying that *Peacemaker* Season 2, with all its crazy universe-jumping, would be the perfect place to drop Deadpool. But honestly, I think a Booster Gold series is where it’s *really* at. It’s been quiet since they announced it, but the buzz is still going, and I’ve heard whispers that Kumail Nanjiani might be playing him. And that would be *amazing* – the guy is hilarious, and Booster Gold needs someone who can nail that over-the-top, goofy vibe. But it’s not just about the comedy, you know? Booster Gold’s story is seriously unique, and that’s what makes him such an underrated character. It’s way more than just a funny guy in a suit.

Booster Gold, a comic book hero, is known for traveling from the future to team up with past heroes, but he’s often seen as a bit of a goofball. Deadpool faces a similar problem in the movie *Deadpool & Wolverine* – he’s desperate to be recognized as a legitimate hero. With Booster Gold likely not playing a major role in the new DC Universe, James Gunn could easily include Deadpool and have the two characters interact. This would be a clever way to hint at the possibility of a larger crossover between the Marvel and DC universes without officially confirming it.

Peacemaker Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
