James Gunn’s R-Rated Batman Movie Set Photo Teases Superman Crossover

James Gunn’s upcoming Batman movie, which will be rated R, has a surprising connection to the Superman film planned for 2025. Photos from the Batman set suggest an exciting team-up is coming. Even though DC Studios is just beginning to roll out its new cinematic universe, audiences have already seen characters from different storylines start to connect, and this trend will continue with the new Batman movie, which will have strong links to the wider DC universe.

Pictures taken on the set of the upcoming Clayface movie suggest a connection to the 2025 Superman film. An X user, @EGGBOY_03, shared photos showing crew members setting up a green and orange poster that features a new look at Gotham City within the DC Universe.

This poster is advertising Jitters Coffee, calling it the best coffee in Metropolis. The company is excited to announce they’re moving locations – from Superman’s city to Gotham City, the home of Batman!

The poster features a logo that briefly appeared in the Superman movie, signaling that Clayface is connected to the larger DC Universe.

The coffee shop wasn’t noticeable in most of Superman, but it became a clear landmark during the battle with the fire-breathing monster in downtown Metropolis.

A large Jitters Coffee billboard is visible in the corner of the shot. It’s on the side of a building and includes a picture of the coffee itself below the company’s name.

Although the details of Clayface’s plan are still secret, recent photos prove that his story will take place in the same universe as the upcoming 2025 Superman movie. This is significant because DC Studios is building this universe at the same time as developing separate, standalone projects like The Batman – Part II, which will continue with The Penguin series on HBO Max.

Currently in development, Clayface will be the third film in the new DC Universe, following Superman and Supergirl. The movie, starring Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie, will explore the beginnings of Matt Hagen and his transformation into the villain Clayface, and how he ultimately causes trouble in Gotham City. Clayface is scheduled to hit theaters on September 11, 2026.

How Batman’s World Is Set Up in Superman & Clayface

Although the Clayface project is further along than anticipated, the overall development of the Gotham area within the new DC Universe (DCU) is still in its initial phases, overseen by DC Studios’ co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. This includes The Brave and the Bold, which will be the first dedicated Batman movie in the DCU, introducing the new versions of Bruce and Damian Wayne, as well as expanding the Bat Family.

Because Superman recently featured Peacemaker (played by John Cena) in a brief appearance, and considering the existing connection between Superman and Clayface, fans are anticipating that Batman’s introduction will showcase his many established relationships within the DC universe. Given Bruce Wayne’s greater popularity compared to Peacemaker, viewers expect a significant role for Batman that highlights these connections.

Although Superman probably won’t be a major part of the Clayface movie, it could show us how Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne first started building their relationship – before they become central figures in the larger DC Universe. Since we have a while to wait for Batman’s own movie, this film might help keep fans engaged by developing his world in the meantime.

DC Studios is taking a deliberate approach to incorporating Batman into its universe, and because he’s such a popular character, excitement will likely grow as more details about his world are revealed.
