If Noah and Allie are birds, then James Marsden is a bird.
Maybe that’s why the actor from The Notebook, who played Lon Hammond in the 2004 movie, isn’t upset that Rachel McAdams’ character chose Ryan Gosling’s character instead of him.
James wonders what happened to his former, energetic lawyer after he and Allie broke up.
He described the man as stable and emotionally well-adjusted, telling TopMob News’ Will Marfuggi in a recent interview that he believed the man would have found happiness in a new, healthy relationship.
Plus, James is supportive of Noah and Allieās love story playing out.
She explained that their ending up together was intentional, a planned part of the story. Itās meant to explore how love isnāt always logical or easily understood.
Okay, so he admitted Lon would have been the sensible pick, the safe choice, but honestly? It doesn’t matter! He basically said what I’ve been screaming at the screen this whole time ā you can’t help who you fall for! The heart just wants what it wants, and that’s all there is to it. It’s perfect, absolutely perfect!
James is happy with how the Nicholas Sparks story concluded, but he remembers times when fans werenāt pleased with the sad fate of his character.
In May, I was told by people that my character, Lon, was portrayed as a good partner ā someone who was financially stable, treated his girlfriend well, and had a healthy, trusting relationship. They contrasted this with the dynamic between Allie and Noah, which they saw as unhealthy and toxic. While I appreciate that perspective, I believe love is simply love, regardless of the specifics.

I’m so excited for James! He’s really embracing unexpected projects, and his new movie, Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, is a perfect example. It’s an action comedy with Vince Vaughn and Eiza GonzĆ”lez, and it’s hitting Hulu on March 27th ā definitely one to watch!
I hadn’t experienced action sequences like this before, but I was excited to try it,” he told TopMob. “It was a really enjoyable experience. Vince and I just jumped in and had a lot of fun with it.”
Before James’ new movie arrives on Hulu, discover some interesting stories from the making of The Notebook.

Believe it or not, the popular novel The Notebook is inspired by a real-life romance. Author Nicholas Sparks based the story on his own grandparentsā relationship, as they were married to Cathy Cote and remained together for over 60 years.

Can you imagine Tom Cruise as Noah? Well, it almost happened.
In 1996, New Line acquired the rights to the novel, and Steven Spielberg initially wanted to direct the film, envisioning the Top Gun star in the leading role. However, due to scheduling issues, the project stalled for several years until Nick Cassavetes took over as director. Cassavetes was immediately set on Ryan Gosling for the main role, but the studio wasn’t convinced at first.
According to Cassavetes, when he suggested Ryan for the main role, New Line Cinema was very surprised ā they thought it was a crazy idea.
Gosling was a little surprised, too, especially after his first meeting with the director.
Nick Cassavetes invited me to his home, and when I arrived, he was in the backyard. He told me, as he shared with Company magazine, that he wanted me for the role because I didnāt fit the typical Hollywood mold. He said I wasnāt conventionally handsome or cool, just a normal guy who seemed a little eccentric.

Before becoming famous for films like Mean Girls and Wedding Crashers, Rachel McAdams was a newcomer and really had to prove herself to land the part of Allie. Director Nick Cassavetes remembered her being fantastic, and praised the studio for taking a chance on two relatively unknown actors. He felt it ultimately paid off, as they both delivered wonderful performances.
Interestingly, before Rachel McAdams was cast as Allie, Ryan Goslingās former co-star Britney Spears was a potential candidate. The two had worked together on The Mickey Mouse Club, and Spears was already a huge star at the time.
Gosling remembered not having seen her much since they were both around twelve years old. He was impressed with her during their screen test, saying she performed really well. He admitted he doesnāt remember much from being twelve himself, but thought she did an excellent job and it was a cool experience.
McAdams only learned that Britney Spears had been considered for her role after the movie was finished. She believes the film would have been very different if Spears had been cast. McAdams feels lucky she got the part, explaining she was a late addition after a nationwide search by the director and Ryan Gosling for the right actress.

Jessica Biel also auditioned for the role of Allie, and she’s said she really wanted the part.
While filming Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I actually auditioned with Ryan Gosling ā right in my trailer, and I was still covered in fake blood! Director Nick Cassavetes really pushed me creatively, which was great. But you face a lot of rejection in this business, and we actors seem to keep coming back for more, even though it’s tough.

Despite eventually becoming a famous Hollywood couple, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams didn’t hit it off right away, according to director Nick Cassavetes. Their initial chemistry was so poor that Gosling even asked if McAdams could be replaced.
According to Cassavetes, Ryan Gosling was having trouble working with a co-star during filming. In the middle of a scene with around 150 people present, Gosling asked Cassavetes to replace the actress he was working with ā Rachel ā with someone else to rehearse lines off-camera. He explained to Cassavetes that he simply wasn’t able to connect with her and wasn’t getting the performance he needed.
So how was it fixed? He let his stars hash their s–t out.
Cassavetes described a tense moment during filming where a producer and actress got into a heated argument. He stepped away and had a cigarette, and when everyone reconvened, the atmosphere improved. He believes Ryan appreciated Rachel for defending her character, and Rachel was relieved to have expressed herself. While filming wasn’t entirely easy after that, it became noticeably less difficult.

In a 2013 interview, McAdams described her and her co-star’s working relationship as professional, clarifying that despite any on-screen chemistry, they weren’t particularly close. She explained it wasn’t animosity, but also not a strong connection ā they simply maintained a professional distance.
It’s no surprise people started rooting for Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as a couple, just like they did for Noah and Allie in ‘The Notebook’. Everyone remembers their passionate kiss onstage when they won the Best Kiss award at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards!
Gosling later confessed he wasn’t sure how their relationship changed from friendly colleagues to something more. He explained that after two years, he reconnected with her in New York, and they realized they might have misjudged their initial impressions of each other.
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams dated for three years before finally ending their relationship in 2009. Although they never publicly talked about the breakup, Gosling did share some details about their memorable romance.
Oh my god, The Notebook! Seriously, that movie⦠it basically brought Ryan and Rachel together! He actually said it introduced him to one of the great loves of his life, which, duh, we all knew! But he also said everyone gets it wrong thinking their relationship was like that movie. He insists their real love story is way more romantic, and honestly? I believe it! It has to be!

Remember the scene in The Notebook where Noah repeatedly asks Allie, “What do you want?” Director Nick Cassavetes shared that Ryan Gosling actually made up that line on the spot, and they knew right away it was perfect for the film.
Cassavetes explained that a particularly memorable moment from the film wasn’t actually planned. ‘He just instinctively knew what to do,’ he said. While Cassavetes appreciated strong writing ā he had a literature background ā he also valued improvisation. ‘He was so good, we simply let him perform it naturally.’

Ryan Gosling wore brown contact lenses throughout the movie to match the eye color of James Garner, the actor who played the older version of Noah. Gosling was committed to maintaining consistency in the film, but Garner, who passed away in 2014, reportedly wasn’t concerned with such details. In fact, according to the director, Gosling even asked Garner about doing accents, which led to a rather uncomfortable and funny exchange.
Cassavetes recounted a conversation with Ryan about acting choices. Ryan started discussing accents and the various ways people speak in South Carolina, but James Garner immediately dismissed accents as silly. Ryan then shifted to physical characteristics, pointing out their different eye colors ā Ryan has blue eyes, while Garner has brown. Garner simply told him to do as he pleased. Ryan then asked about hair, and Garner gave the same response: do whatever feels right. After the brief exchange, Ryan turned to Cassavetes and told him to be quiet. Cassavetes explained this illustrated the stark contrast between two very successful, yet different, acting approaches.
Ryan Gosling’s dedication to his roles sometimes led to extreme ideas, as demonstrated when he suggested actually burning down a set representing Noah’s house. Director Cassavetes recounted that Gosling would repeatedly ask to destroy the house, explaining it as a way to express his character’s inner turmoil, saying he wanted to ‘cleanse his fire.’ Cassavetes admitted he often had no idea what Gosling meant by these requests.
Gosling’s idea didn’t make the final cut.

John Cassavetes didn’t need to look far for an actress to play the older Allie: he cast his own mother, the renowned Gena Rowlands. His father, the late director John Cassavetes, is also featured in the film. The photos used to depict Allie and Noah throughout their lives are actually personal pictures of Rowlands and her husband, with Jennifer Garner’s face digitally added.
Producer Mark Johnson remembered never hearing a director called ‘Mom’ on set before. While she maintained a professional relationship with him, everyone was conscious of the fact that she was also his mother.
In a 2016 interview with Variety, Rowlands confessed she was amazed by how popular the film remained over time. She explained, “I never expected it to resonate with people so strongly.” She believed its success stemmed from its depiction of lifelong loveāa theme rarely explored in cinema. Unlike most films, it showed a complete love story, from start to finish, suggesting that love could truly last forever.

Ryan Gosling, only 23 years old at the time, fully immersed himself in the Charleston lifestyle two months before filming began. He spent his time rowing on the Ashley River and even learned carpentry, becoming an apprentice to a local cabinet-maker. As he told People magazine, he and the crew actually built all the Adirondack chairs seen on the property and enjoyed relaxing in them.
Ryan Gosling shared a funny story about the dining room table used in the movie The Notebook. He built the table himself and filmed a memorable scene with Rachel McAdams on it. Although he wanted to keep it, the agreement with the carpenter was that he would get the table back, and Gosling jokingly added that the carpenter is unaware of the scene that took place on it.
Before filming, McAdams dedicated months to preparing for her role, including living in South Carolina to learn the Southern accent and understand the local culture. She also took ballet and etiquette classes at the direction of the director, Cassavetes, and even attended weddings and spoke with debutantes to fully embody the character.
The director asked her to increase her fitness routine. McAdams explained she’d never worked out so intensely, even starting to use protein powder. She joked that her muscles got too big for the 1940s aesthetic they were aiming for, becoming more like a modern fitness model. They had to adjust her training to achieve a more period-appropriate look.

One of the most iconic scenes in the film nearly didn’t happen. Director Cassevetes explained that the studio was worried they couldn’t successfully film Noah and Allie’s boat ride with all the birds.
He explained that the filmmakers told him the bird scene wouldn’t work. They’d consulted with animal handlers and determined it was impossible to get the birds to perform as needed, so they asked him to remove it from the film.
Cassavetes was determined to include the scene, and went to great lengths to make it happen ā he even kept birds on the movie set for filming.
We purchased a large trailer and got a group of young birds from local breeders. We raised them like chicks, taking them to the lake each day to feed them. By the time filming began, they were nearly grown, accustomed to being fed there. When the studio representatives came to check on our progressāthey were skeptical we could pull it offāwe led the birds to the lake, and they readily went out onto the water. We were pleased with how it worked technically, as the birds were stunning to watch.

Everyone remembers the iconic rain scene in The Notebook, but for actors Noah and Allie, it wasn’t as romantic as it looked. Rachel McAdams shared that they were actually just trying to escape the cold downpour. She also explained that her dress, while made for the movie, and much of her wardrobe, were vintage rentals from the 1940s and were falling apart during filming.
Interestingly, Allie was actually barefoot in that scene because the shoes Rachel McAdams was wearing fell apart during filming.

The passionate scene between Noah and Allie in the movie was originally even more intense, but it was edited to get a PG-13 rating. Director Nick Cassavetes explained he wanted to show the couple’s attraction without being explicit, saying, “I didn’t want young viewers exposed to anything inappropriate.”
He described himself as someone with old-fashioned values, explaining that he prefers modesty and doesn’t like seeing people exposed, simply because it makes him uncomfortable. He acknowledged that while sexuality isn’t everything in a relationship, it’s a significant part and should be acknowledged, as physical attraction is important.

You know, it’s always interesting to hear what actors thought about their projects afterward. I remember reading an interview with James Marsden where he confessed he wasn’t sure ’27 Dresses’ would be a success, even though he was in it! He jokingly admitted he was a little bummed his character didn’t win the girl, but honestly, he just didn’t have high hopes for the movie’s performance when it was first released. He shared this with Out magazine, which I found pretty relatable ā even stars have doubts!
He explained that he never intentionally makes a bad film, but sometimes they just don’t turn out well, and he finds himself wondering about creative choices during filming. Surprisingly, some of the movies he expected to flop have become massive hits. He recalled thinking The Notebook would be a typical, overly sentimental TV movie, and now itās become a beloved classic.
