James Ransone, the actor known for his roles in It Chapter 2 and The Wire, has died at the age of 46. TMZ reports that he died by suicide on Friday. Ransone often worked with horror director Scott Derrickson, appearing in films like Sinister, The Black Phone, and a segment of VHS 85. He even returned as “Deputy So-and-So” in Sinister 2, despite Derrickson not directing the sequel. However, he was most recognized for his work in It Chapter 2 and The Wire. Ransone gained prominence playing Ziggy, a troubled criminal, in a 12-episode arc on HBO’s critically acclaimed crime drama, where his character’s choices ultimately led to his demise.
The actor grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, the city where the show The Wire is set. He’s mentioned that his character, Ziggy, represents some of the struggles people experience living in Baltimore.
James Ransone built a solid career playing supporting roles in well-known films such as Spike Lee’s Inside Man, the remake of Oldboy, and Sean Baker’s Tangerine. He also appeared in TV shows like Law & Order. Later, he became a key part of the cast in It Chapter Two, portraying an older version of Eddie Kaspbrak, a character originally played by Jack Dylan Grazer in the first movie and through flashbacks in the sequel.
Eddie Kaspbrak’s ongoing struggle with hypochondria remained a key part of his character, and the villain, Pennywise, often used this weakness to frighten him. James Ransone delivered a particularly strong performance as Eddie, who plays a crucial role in the film’s climax, ultimately facing his fears to rescue his friends. The movie proved to be a major success, earning $473 million and becoming Ransone’s highest-grossing film to date.
I really enjoyed seeing James Ransone in Poker Face earlier this year – that show is fantastic! He also had a small role in Black Phone 2, bringing back his character Max from the first movie, even though Max died in the original. It was cool to see him again in a flashback. I checked his IMDb page, and it doesn’t look like he has anything else coming up, which makes me wonder if Black Phone 2 might be the last time we see him on screen. It’s a bit sad if that’s true!
