James Tolkan, Back to the Future Actor, Dies at 94

James Tolkan, the actor famous for playing Strickland in Back to the Future, has died at the age of 94.

Michael Klastorin, a publicist for the Back to the Future films, announced that Tolkan passed away on Thursday in Saranac Lake, New York. An obituary is available on the official Back to the Future website. The cause of death has not been released.

I always found it fascinating learning about actors’ backgrounds, and Robert Tolkan’s is a great story. Born in Calumet, Michigan, back in 1931, he eventually moved to Tucson, Arizona, and finished high school there in ’49. He served in the Navy during the Korean War, and then, really chasing his dream, he took a bus to New York City to study acting with the legendary Stella Adler and Lee Strasburg. For a quarter of a century, he built a career on the New York stage, and he was even one of the original cast members of Glengarry Glen Ross – a truly iconic play!

Tolkan began acting in films in the early 1980s, with roles in movies like Sidney Lumet’s Prince of the City (1981) and War Games (1983). He’s best known for his portrayal of Principal Strickland in Back to the Future (1985), a role he revisited in Back to the Future Part II and Back to the Future Part III. He even played Strickland’s ancestors in Back to the Future: The Animated Series.

I was really saddened to hear about Tolkan’s passing. It seems he was a huge animal lover, which is wonderful. His family is asking that, instead of flowers, people consider donating to an animal shelter, rescue group, or Humane Society in his name. It’s a lovely way to remember him and support a cause he clearly cared about.

Tolkan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Parmelee, and three nieces who live in Des Moines, Iowa.
