Following the unexpected passing of actor James Van Der Beek on Wednesday, a GoFundMe campaign was created to support his wife and their six children. Initially aiming to raise $550,000, the campaign quickly exceeded expectations, reaching over $1 million in less than a day. Due to the incredible generosity of donors, the fundraising goal was increased to $1.5 million, and has now surpassed that amount by more than $500,000.

James Van Der Beek is famous for his role as Dawson Leery in the popular teen show Dawson’s Creek. His character on the show was a big fan of director Steven Spielberg. Although Van Der Beek and Spielberg never collaborated professionally, Spielberg and his wife were among those who donated to a GoFundMe campaign.
Defining Himself
In 2023, actor James Van Der Beek received a diagnosis of colorectal cancer. He kept the news private for over a year, revealing it in November 2024. The medical bills created significant financial hardship for his family. To help with the expenses, he auctioned off items from his popular shows, Dawson’s Creek and the movie Varsity Blues.

Last March, on his birthday, the actor reflected on how his identity had changed over time. He explained that he used to think of himself primarily as an actor, but didn’t find that very satisfying. Becoming a husband felt more meaningful, but he ultimately found the greatest fulfillment in becoming a father.
An incredible message from a man who has now met his Maker.
May you rest in peace, Vander James.

For years, I really felt like I had a good handle on who I was. I saw myself as a loving husband, a strong and capable father, someone who provided for his family and took care of the land we were fortunate enough to call home. That definition felt really solid, you know? But this year, everything changed. I was suddenly forced to confront my own mortality – I had to really face the reality of death, and it made me rethink everything.
Van Der Beek explained that facing cancer forced him to confront his identity, as everything he’d previously used to define himself was taken away. After much thought, he realized he was inherently worthy of love, simply by existing. He then questioned why he wouldn’t deserve his own love as well, extending that thought to everyone else.
The Generosity of Fans
The Van Der Beek family has created a GoFundMe page because they’re facing a tough time and working to keep their home and kids in school. They say support from friends, family, and the community would be a huge help as they work through this challenging period.

Although nothing can truly ease the Van Der Beek family’s grief after losing a husband and father, the kindness they’ve received from so many people may offer some comfort during this difficult time. It’s a reminder of how loved and respected he was by people everywhere.
