Jamie Lee Curtis’ ‘Murder, She Wrote’ Movie Taps ‘Pitch Perfect’ Director

A reboot of Murder, She Wrote starring Jamie Lee Curtis has found its director – someone known for starting successful movie series. Curtis confirmed in July 2025 that she will play Jessica Fletcher, the famous detective originally portrayed by Angela Lansbury, in a new movie. The directing team behind 21 Jump Street, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will produce the film alongside Amy Pascal, a former Sony executive. Universal Pictures will distribute the movie.

According to Variety, Jason Moore will direct the new Murder, She Wrote movie. Moore is known for directing the hit film Pitch Perfect, which made over $115 million globally and spawned a series of sequels. He’s also directed comedies like Sisters, starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and the Jennifer Lopez rom-com Shotgun Wedding with Josh Duhamel. Most recently, Moore directed the pilot episode of the Legally Blonde spin-off series, Elle, and is also an executive producer on the show.

The History of ‘Murder, She Wrote’

CBS

As a huge mystery fan, I always loved Murder, She Wrote. It starred the amazing Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher, a mystery novelist who had a knack for stumbling upon—and solving—murders, usually back in her charming hometown of Cabot Cove, Maine, but sometimes all over the country. It first aired on CBS back in 1984 and was an instant success with both critics and viewers like me. The show ran for an incredible 12 seasons – 264 episodes in total! – finally wrapping up in 1996. They even made four TV movies after that, with the last one airing in 2004. There was even talk of a reboot a few years ago with Octavia Spencer, which sounded fantastic, but unfortunately, it never quite came to fruition.

Plans for a movie based on the TV show Murder, She Wrote were first announced in September 2023. Amy Pascal will produce, and the screenplay is being written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, the team behind Dumb Money. In 2024, Phil Lord and Chris Miller—who previously worked with Pascal on the 21 Jump Street films—joined the project. With Jamie Lee Curtis, an Academy Award winner, now set to star and Jason Moore directing, filming is expected to begin around 2026, with a potential release in 2027.

Universal Pictures is continuing its trend of bringing beloved TV shows to the big screen with a new Murder, She Wrote movie. This follows announcements of reboots for Miami Vice, set to release August 6, 2027, directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) and starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, and Knight Rider, which will be helmed by the creators of Cobra Kai (Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg). Now, they’re hoping to capture the same comforting mystery feel of Murder, She Wrote for a new generation of moviegoers.
