In Freaky Friday, the actors encounter increasingly intricate predicaments because they don’t merely exchange positions; instead, their roles undergo more complex transformations. Unlike the 2003 film where Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan portrayed a mother-daughter pair who briefly exchanged lives, this time both are trading bodies with two teenage girls. This swap isn’t always straightforward to grasp, making it challenging for them. In an interview with ComicBook at San Diego Comic-Con last week, Curtis mentioned that this was her most significant challenge. She explained that the disconnect between herself and her character this time felt wider, which made it more difficult to understand her thoughts, but maybe that’s why a body-swap story was essential in this instance.
Curtis pondered, “Teenagers can be quite complex.” He explained, “In the movie ‘Freaky Friday,’ it was straightforward – adults stood upright while teenagers slouched. It was all so clear-cut. But here, it’s a more intricate transformation, and we had to uncover it through words, language, body movements, mannerisms, and various other aspects. That makes it much harder because it’s not as simple as thinking you’ve got it right.
Curtis likened the character she’s playing now to her portrayal of Donna Berzatto in The Bear Season 2, stating that Donna is a type of person she recognizes and can empathize with. She felt confident in her performance as Donna because she knows her well, but finding the right tone for Lily was more challenging since she’s not familiar with this character.
In a twist on the original 2003 film, “Freaky Friday” serves as a sequel that’s come a bit later, with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reprising their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman. This time around, it’s not only Anna’s daughter, Harper (played by Julia Butters), who’s skeptical about her upcoming wedding. Lily, the daughter of Anna’s fiancé Eric (Manny Jacinto), will also become Anna’s step-daughter, with Sophia Hammons portraying Lily in the story.
As a movie aficionado, I’m thrilled by the tantalizing glimpse of a unique four-way body swap in the upcoming film: Anna and Harper exchange identities, while Tess and Lily do the same. This intricate dance will challenge them all as they navigate the complexities of living another’s life without causing chaos in their own. The scriptwriter, Curtis, skillfully infuses British colloquialisms into one character’s dialogue, adding an interesting twist to the narrative, and potentially intensifying the drama that lies ahead.
