On Tuesday night during the TRIC awards ceremony, Jamie Theakston openly and emotionally shared his feelings as he received an accolade.
After wrapping up his morning radio show “Heart Breakfast” alongside Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden, the 54-year-old presenter graced the stage during the evening’s event.
Despite being diagnosed with stage one laryngeal cancer in October 2024, the celebrity confessed that he wasn’t certain about his future during the past year as he fought his cancer battle.
In a lighthearted manner, he teased his co-host by saying: “I’m glad to be here, since you see, my co-host isn’t fond of the spotlight – luckily for you, I am!
Later, Jamie admitted, “Over the past year, there have been moments when I wasn’t even sure of my own future, let alone standing here on this stage. So, I truly value this opportunity.
He added: ‘We last won this 10 years ago so I’ll see you in 10 years.’

Laryngeal cancer refers to a disease that targets the larynx, or voice box. It was initially when people around him pointed out an issue with his voice that Jamie decided to visit the doctor for the first time.
Following his experience of undergoing three significant operations, along with being informed that there was a 1 in 6 possibility he could no longer speak, Jamie announced earlier this year that he had successfully beaten cancer and would resume his full-time radio duties.
Last month, it was disclosed that Jamie had hidden his potential cancer diagnosis from his cherished wife, Sophie Siegle, for several weeks while they were on a family trip to Japan. They were enjoying their vacation together.
The radio host expressed that he was taken aback by the news to such an extent that he made efforts to keep it hidden so he could fully appreciate the trip with his sons Sidney, aged 17, and Kit, who is 16.
On Davina McCall’s Begin Again podcast, Jamie shared that he needed urgent scans mere hours before departing on their long-anticipated family flight.
He shared, “I kept quiet about it because at the time, I hoped it wasn’t cancer. Since I believed it might not be serious, I didn’t see much need in sharing the news with others.” He added, “So I tried to keep things under wraps and convinced myself that it was likely nothing to worry about.
In the quiet confines of my home, I received the news that would forever alter our lives – a cancer diagnosis, confirmed by the biopsy results. With a heavy heart, I shared this life-changing revelation with my beloved wife, who responded with a palpable sense of despair.
During our vacation, I carried a concern with me subtly. Despite that, we truly enjoyed ourselves; however, it was always present as a backdrop.

Sharing the difficult truth with his sons was the most challenging task: ‘I had to tell them I’d be alright, but they were too young to grasp the situation. When one mentions cancer to a 14-year-old, they often believe it means certain death.’
‘When I learned that my mother passed away from cancer, my youngest son was with me. Consequently, he understood the gravity of the situation.’
In the last months of 2022, Jamie unfortunately lost his mother. He expressed relief by saying, “I was overjoyed she passed away before I was diagnosed with cancer. It would have been devastating for her to learn about my illness.” He’s uncertain how it might have affected her emotionally.
During our conversation, he reminisced about instances when people pointed out that his voice seemed unusual: They commented on my voice not being quite normal, he shared. ‘I realized it was off too,’ he added, ‘but I figured it was just a sore throat and nothing to worry about.’
Initially, a trip to an ENT (ear, nose, and throat specialist) seemed routine. However, his examination led him to suspect cancer. I was taken aback when he shared this news, to which he added, “In most cases, it’s cancer, and we need to arrange scans immediately.
Following the first procedure, doctors had concerns that some cancerous tissue might still be present, leading to subsequent surgeries. As he looked back, he realized they had come perilously close to taking away such a significant portion of his vocal cord that he may have lost his ability to speak.

However, the third operation turned out well, and in January of this year, Jamie rejoined Heart Breakfast alongside co-host Amanda Holden with great fanfare – a woman he credits for helping him get through it all. ‘Amanda was amazing,’ he stated. ‘She constantly reached out to me. She kept the program running. She’s a powerful force.’
After overcoming cancer, Jamie shares that his latest health experience has significantly shifted his perspective on life. He describes it as a profound blessing. When tough events occur in our lives, there are usually valuable lessons to learn from them. And he genuinely believes that he has grown as an individual due to his experiences.
I’m really hoping this will help me become a more effective parent, and perhaps even a more polished broadcaster. It seems to be making me a more well-rounded individual overall.
