Janine’s Shocking C-Bomb: The Perfect Test in It’s Always Sunny & Abbott Elementary Crossover

When Abbott Elementary debuted in 2021, it would have seemed unbelievable to me that character Janine Teagues, played by Quinta Brunson, would one day use the term “total utter wretch” – a phrase I’d immediately dispute. Yet, the magic of Sweet Dee should never be underestimated! The second part of the crossover between It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary, scheduled for 2025 TV lineup, had fans like me on edge over Janine’s surprising outburst. Charlie Day, however, clarified that this joke served as the “ideal litmus test.

Janine Has Fans Clutching Their Pearls Over Her Cussing On Always Sunny

In a surprising turn of events during the premiere of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Season 17, known as “The Gang Fumbles Abbott Elementary,” Janine got extremely upset when Kaitlin Olson’s character tried to steal her man. However, it’s safe to say that none of the viewers anticipated a second-grade teacher blurting out the C-word in front of the make-believe film crew. The latter half of the crossover with the ABC sitcom “Abbott Elementary” was portrayed in its mockumentary style, and the fans were genuinely caught off guard by this unexpected twist. A Reddit user commented:

The astonishment on Gregory’s face mirrored ours when he exclaimed, “I assumed you were going to label her as rude.” This spectator was taken aback by Janine’s reply, echoing the character in their social media post.

‘Bitch can be a very fine dog, that is not what this woman is.’ Oh give her another Emmy…..

I’d have no objection to it. This viewer confessed to holding their breath in shock when the elementary school teacher used a strong language, expressing it as “C-bomb.

I find it hilarious when a character known for not swearing suddenly uses intense profanity, causing me to react with surprise, much like I wouldn’t dare utter such language myself.

It’s clear that Quinta Brunson left quite an impression on her audience, as she wasn’t the only one taken aback by her performance. The spectators’ responses ranged from gasping to clutching their pearls.

  • Holy shit. Janine got me over here clutching my pearls. I wasn’t ready to hear her say that. – ejaybugboy3
  • I screamed 😭 thought she’s going to say bitch too – ladyevarina
  • LMFAOOOOOOO I’M JAW DROPPED 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 – aliensgroove
  • 😂😂 When ‘tell me how you really feel’ becomes ‘damn not that real.’ – stuful

This was a significant turning point, as it confirmed that Quinta Brunson and the team behind Abbott Elementary were truly ready for action.

Charlie Day Calls The Joke ‘The Perfect Test’

The creators of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” made a bold move by surprising viewers from the very beginning (and my sympathies go out to those who didn’t take Kaitlin Olson’s advice on this explicit show). Charlie Day shared with Variety how that iconic TV scene came about and how he tested Quinta Brunson’s limits using it. He said:

I recalled jotting down that joke and thinking, “I’m not sure if she’ll find it funny.” When we shared it with her, it turned out to be an excellent gauge of whether or not it would resonate. I believe the key to making this crossover successful was having them share our humor playground and being open and eager to collaborate. Oh, and by the way, Quinta has a rich background in comedy that predates this project, and it was fantastic!

The team from “Abbott Elementary” appeared eager to break free from their usual network TV limitations for an episode, and it was particularly noteworthy that Sheryl Lee Ralph’s use of profanity received high marks. This daring move served as a fantastic start for the 17th season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and also provided a fulfilling end to their unexpected crossover with “Abbott”.
