Many anime series are set on Earth, but a similar number—or even more—take place in outer space. Popular franchises like Mobile Suit Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and Space Dandy are all set among the stars. Even One Piece, which usually stays on Earth, recently partnered with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency for a special project. And it won’t be the only anime heading to space this year, as another crossover event is planned for later in 2024.
This summer, JAXA, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, is partnering with the popular anime Dr. Stone. While the characters won’t be going to space themselves, JAXA is celebrating the anime’s lunar ambitions with a special collaboration. A new illustration featuring Senku in a spacesuit has been released, and a Dr. Stone exhibit will be held at the JAXA Tsukuba Space Center from April 4th to August 31st. Senku has always dreamed of space travel, and this partnership brings that dream to life in a fun and engaging way.

Dr. Stone Is Blasting Off Again

JAXA explained that the Tsukuba Space Center is Japan’s main hub for space development. It’s where they control Japan’s part of the International Space Station (called “Kibo”), train astronauts, build rockets, and conduct research to advance space technology. Within the center, the Space Dome features a full-size model of Kibo and will host a special exhibition in collaboration with the anime Dr. Stone (more details about the exhibition will be announced soon). This is a great chance to experience the excitement of space through the world of Dr. Stone.
The anime adaptation of Dr. Stone is nearing its conclusion, bringing the story of Senku and the Stone World to an end for fans around the globe. The final part of season four will premiere on April 2nd, wrapping up the series. The original manga finished in 2022, explaining the petrification mystery and giving Senku a satisfying conclusion. The anime aims to deliver a similar ending, and if it stays true to the manga, it promises to be a fitting farewell to this unique world.
