Sales of the PlayStation 5 in Japan are decreasing again, now that the initial enthusiasm for the special Japanese model has faded.
Between November 24th and November 30th, Sony sold 17,491 units of the new Japanese PS5 model. This was a decrease of almost 6,000 units compared to the previous week, which only included sales from the first two or three days the console was available.
So, it looks like the PS5 actually sold less in its first full week in Japan than it did during its initial launch days – that’s a little weird. The good news is the Switch 2 totally dominated sales, with over 97,500 units sold! It was definitely the most popular console that week.
Here’s how the sales data looks for 24th November to 30th November in Japan (via Gematsu):
- Switch 2 – 97,677
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 17,491
- Switch OLED Model – 16,004
- PlayStation 5 Pro – 15,736
- Switch Lite – 12,896
- Switch – 6,427
- PlayStation 5 – 2,559
- Xbox Series X Digital Edition – 64
- Xbox Series X – 52
- Xbox Series S – 56
- PlayStation 4 – 13
Following Nintendo’s strategy, a new, more affordable PS5 model has been released in Japan, costing ¥55,000 (around $350) compared to the standard version’s ¥72,980 (approximately $473). To achieve this lower price, the console is specifically limited to the Japanese language and requires a Japanese PlayStation Network account, making it unusable for players outside of Japan.
