Jar Jar Binks, played by Ahmed Best, is a famously divisive character in Star Wars history. A lot of the negative reaction to him, which began with his debut in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, coincided with the rise of the internet and online fandom. This allowed particularly harsh criticism, which likely always existed, to spread much more widely. Best himself was deeply affected by this backlash.

The preview shows Senator Jar Jar Binks undertaking a secret assignment on the planet Urubai, specifically in the busy city of Quarrant City. He’s there to meet with an ambassador regarding his mission. It’s important to remember that at this point, Jar Jar is largely known for being the Senator who supported granting emergency powers to Chancellor Palpatine – powers Palpatine later used to seize control and become Emperor, establishing the Empire.
The story seems to take place before Palpatine’s rise to power was widely known. We’ve already seen hints of discontent in Andor, suggesting rumors about Palpatine circulated even before he gained emergency powers. It looks like Jar Jar’s assignment on Urubai will reveal the full extent of his past mistakes.
Shortly after arriving on Urabai, Jar Jar was robbed while searching for the ambassador. Luckily, the robber was scared off unexpectedly. Jar Jar thought he’d frightened the mugger away himself, but it was actually the Jedi Master Kelleran Beq who intervened.
Beq welcomes Jar Jar, and seems to understand why he’s come. Considering Beq later rescues Grogu, the conversation they have here might explain how Beq knew to intervene during the events of Order 66.
But to find out if that’s the case, you’ll have to pick up a copy of Star Wars: Jar Jar #1 next week!
