For fans still arguing over Rory’s best boyfriend on Gilmore Girls, Panera Bread offered a fun way to participate this fall: by connecting each boyfriend to a different soup! The restaurant brought back Jared Padalecki and Matt Czuchry for a campaign, but many wondered where Jess was. It turns out Milo Ventimiglia just found out about the miniGilmore Girls* reunion, and his reaction is great.
It’s been 25 years since audiences first met Lorelai (Lauren Graham), a single mom, and her daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel), as we watched Rory grow up and navigate life and love. When asked why he didn’t appear with his former co-stars in a recent Panera Bread commercial, Milo Ventimiglia explained to People magazine:
There was a Panera commercial?
Even though this situation feels like a major snub – similar to when Mariah Carey famously said, “I don’t know her” – the This Is Us actor genuinely wasn’t aware of the advertisement, and he has a reasonable explanation.
I’ve got a newborn daughter, I live under a rock. I had no idea. That’s awesome.
I agree with that assessment. The commercial features Jared Padalecki and Matt Czuchry enthusiastically arguing about their favorite soups. Padalecki’s Fireside Chili is portrayed as being similar to his character Dean – Rory’s initial love interest – being dependable and having a comforting, familiar taste – the “perfect first bowl of soup.”
Matt Czuchry describes his Autumn Squash Soup as refined and incredibly flavorful, comparing it to the character of Logan, Rory’s college boyfriend.
Apparently, neither of them is thrilled about the Black Bean Soup being back – jokingly called “the bad boy” by the Supernatural actor. Matt Czuchry, talking about Milo Ventimiglia’s character Jess, described him as “brooding, mysterious, and hot,” which the new father found funny, and he went on to say:
That’s amusing! I need to find out more about that. They’re both really great people, and I miss them a lot.
If you haven’t decided which soup is your favorite at Panera Bread, their new ad is worth checking out. But to save you the effort of finding it, here’s what it’s about:
The debate over who was the best boyfriend on Gilmore Girls continues among fans, but the actors who played those roles have always been supportive of each other. A few years ago, Milo Ventimiglia publicly expressed his appreciation for Dean, and Jared Padalecki playfully responded with a sign showing his support for Jess.
Given how close the cast is, let’s hope Panera Bread includes Milo Ventimiglia in any future reunions – it would be a great way to show respect for the ‘Team Jess’ group.
You can still enjoy all the heartwarming moments with Lorelai and Rory in Stars Hollow by watching Gilmore Girls on Netflix or Hulu. And don’t forget to check out the continuation, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which is also available on Netflix.
