Jason Momoa’s new action comedy has found one of its leads in a DCEU villain actor.
Jason Momoa first became known as a DC Comics character in 2018 with the successful film Aquaman. While his run as that hero is finished, he’s joining the new DC Universe created by James Gunn and Peter Safran, playing Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl movie. And now, he has another new film project in development.
According to Deadline, Jason Momoa will star alongside Andy Samberg in a new Netflix action comedy called Protecting Jared, currently being filmed in Oahu, Hawaii. Jai Courtney, known for playing Boomerang in Suicide Squad (2016) and The Suicide Squad (2021), will also appear in the film, along with Aimee Carrero. Reuben Fleischer, who directed Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, is directing the movie.
The upcoming movie, Protecting Jared, was written by Rob Klein and John Solomon, a writing team known for their 16 years at Saturday Night Live and multiple Emmy nominations. While details about the story and characters haven’t been revealed, the film will take place in Hawaii. Jason Momoa’s On the Roam and Andy Samberg’s Party Over Here are producing the movie.
Jason Momoa’s work on Protecting Jared follows his recent role in the Prime Video action comedy The Wrecking Crew (2026), where he starred alongside Dave Bautista. The Wrecking Crew received mostly good reviews and was largely filmed and set in Hawaii.
This summer, Jason Momoa will first appear as Lobo in the new Supergirl movie directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock. There’s also been talk for a while that Momoa might eventually get his own movie focused on the DC antihero character.
Andy Samberg recently appeared in films like The Roses (2025), Good Burger 2 (2023), and Lee (2023). Courtney was recently in the Netflix film War Machine (2026) with Alan Ritchson, and also starred in the shark thriller Dangerous Animals (2025). Viewers might recognize Carrero from her work on Apple TV’s Your Friends and Neighbors.
While we don’t have a firm release date for the new movie starring Jason Momoa and Andy Samberg, filming has begun, so it might be available on Netflix sometime next year. A trailer for Protecting Jared probably won’t appear until late this year or early next year, but the recent news about the cast and director suggests it’s a movie worth watching.
