Jason Momoa’s Aquaman’s Status in the DCU Confirmed by James Gunn

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’m excited about the fresh slate that the DC Universe is offering, yet unsure about where Jason Momoa’s Aquaman films fit in this new narrative. James Gunn, who hosts Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, recently hinted at his indecision regarding this matter. This podcast, launching on Tuesday before the premiere of Peacemaker Season 2 on August 21st, holds a unique position. While Season 1 was released prior to Gunn’s role in overseeing the DCU, Season 2 will undeniably be considered part of the canonical storyline.

In this podcast, Gunn discussed a scene from Peacemaker Season 1 that subtly referenced Aquaman. He hinted at the possibility that this could mean the movie might align with the DCU’s new narrative, but he expressed skepticism about the likelihood of it happening.

The filmmaker expressed uncertainty about whether Aquaman is considered part of the official storyline (canon), suggesting it might not be. He further hinted that if the DC Universe sticks with its current Aquaman character, adjustments to the timeline may be necessary since Season 2 of Peacemaker is in progress, and Superman and Aquaman are not yet established as famous heroes in this context.

Currently, as I speak, the podcast titled “Peacemaker: The Official Podcast with James Gunn” has been taken down from many prominent platforms, leaving uncertainty about its potential return. In this podcast, Gunn aimed to provide commentary during a full re-watch of Season 1 of Peacemaker, resolving inconsistencies within the DC Universe as he went along. The freshly minted franchise has been forging a new path with productions like “Creature Commandos” and “Superman>”, but with “Peacemaker“, DC will have to confront its recent history of frequent reboots directly.

It’s understandable that some at Warner Bros. might want to continue the Aquaman series, given its success in the DCEU. However, the sequel didn’t quite match the original’s box office earnings, and the plot seems disconnected from Superman’s setting. In the DCU, metahumans have been public knowledge for roughly 300 years, which means Aquaman’s emergence wouldn’t have had the same profound impact on society as it did in the first movie.

Another point to consider is the matter of Jason Momoa’s multiple roles. He’s set to make his appearance in the DC Universe next year, portraying the unconventional space bounty hunter Lobo in Supergirl. If Momoa could effectively differentiate between these characters, it would mean a heavier time investment for him, given his busy schedule with other projects.

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that the captivating first season of “Peacemaker” is currently streaming on HBO Max! Mark your calendars for August 21st, as we eagerly anticipate the premiere of Season 2. The DCEU films are also available there, but keep in mind that you might not find many clues about the upcoming DCU in them.
