Jason Momoa’s latest television production, titled “Chief of War,” has been endorsed as “Certified Fresh” by Rotten Tomatoes. This new Apple TV+ show made its premiere by airing the first two episodes last Friday. A labor of love for Momoa, this series is being hailed as a “brutal epic” that skillfully portrays Native Hawaiian history with a high level of authenticity. Over the past decade, Jason Momoa has been working diligently on the creation of “Chief of War,” and it appears his efforts have been rewarded, as the first two episodes have earned the series an 89% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 75% audience rating for the Popcornmeter.
Since 2015, Jason Momoa and co-creator Thomas Pa’a Sibbett have been developing the concept for the series “Chief of War“, delving deeply into research to fully develop their idea. Although Momoa has been a part of Hollywood for some time, it was his roles in “Game of Thrones” and the DC Extended Universe that significantly boosted his career. This newfound success enabled him to propose “Chief of War” to Apple and its streaming service. In 2022, the streaming platform agreed to produce “Chief of War“, following a positive collaboration between Momoa and the service on the series “See.
The “Chief of War,” a nine-episode limited series, narrates the story of Chief Ka’iana (Momoa), an ancient Hawaiian warrior chief who aims to bring harmony among the four feuding kingdoms of the Hawaiian Islands. Facing both internal strife and the impending danger of external invasion, this historical tale is set against the backdrop of the tumultuous politics and tribal conflicts of late 18th century Hawaii.
Joining Momoa in this series are Luciane Buchanan, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Te Kohe Tuhaka, Brandon Finn, Siua Ikale’o, Mainei Kinimaka, Temuera Morrison, and James Udom.
For Jason Momoa, the role of ‘Chief of War’ goes beyond a mere passion project; it represents an opportunity to delve into his culture and educate others about Hawaii’s history. Not only does he star in and co-create the series, but Momoa also penned parts of the project. Before the premiere of ‘Chief of War’, Momoa had already amassed a substantial portfolio in Hollywood. This includes a significant role in the popular HBO series, Game of Thrones, followed by starring as Aquaman in two live-action films. Prior to these roles, he made appearances on shows like Baywatch, North Shore, and Stargate: Atlantis.
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I got my big break in 2011 with the movie “Conan the Barbarian,” where I stepped into the sword and loincloth of the legendary hero. Though the film garnered a mix of opinions, it opened doors for me as I later became an official cast member on “Game of Thrones.” Nowadays, you can catch me in blockbuster hits like “A Minecraft Movie,” “Fast X,” and “Dune: Part One.” Upcoming projects include “Dune: Part Three,” “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” and the live-action “Street Fighter” film.
Chief of War will drop new episodes every Friday, leading up to the finale on September 19th.
