Jason Statham is teaming up once again with director Guy Ritchie for a new crime thriller, a project they’ve been developing for years. This will be their sixth collaboration, following films like Snatch, Revolver, and Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre. They previously worked together on Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Wrath of Man.
For years, plans have been underway to reunite the characters from the popular crime thriller “Layer Cake,” which starred Daniel Craig in 2004. The new project will be based on J.J. Connolly’s novel “Viva La Madness,” a sequel to “Layer Cake.” However, according to Variety, the film—described as an action thriller—won’t be a direct sequel, spin-off, or continuation of the original movie or Connolly’s other work. It’s being developed as a completely new, standalone story.
Jason Statham will produce and star in a new action thriller, currently titled Viva La Madness. Ritchie will write and direct the film, which is slated to begin production in January 2026. The movie will be a collaboration between Statham’s Punch Palace Productions, Lumina Studios (helmed by Gangs of London’s Thomas Benski), and Toff Guy Films, with Black Bear handling US distribution.
For over ten years, a sequel to the film Layer Cake, again featuring Jason Statham and directed by Guy Ritchie, has been in the works. Although it’s being presented as a new story, the details of the original book – summarized below – likely offer some hints about the upcoming movie.
Viva la Madness takes a global turn, featuring drug trafficking between continents, hidden money transfers, and sophisticated online scams – all depicted with a disturbingly realistic feel. Meanwhile, the main character from Layer Cake is forced back into the dangerous world of drugs just as he’s hoping to settle into a peaceful retirement. The story jumps from luxurious Caribbean life to a perilous existence in London, involving Venezuelan cartels and gun violence even in upscale areas like Mayfair, escalating from darkly humorous situations to outright criminal chaos.
