Two popular Jason Statham movies about underwater creatures are now available to stream for free.
Starting December 1st, you’ll be able to watch both The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench on Tubi for free. Both movies are now confirmed to be added to Tubi’s streaming selection.
The movie, directed by Jon Turteltaub and written by Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, and Erich Hoeber, is based on Steve Alten’s 1997 novel, Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror. After a risky rescue attempt damages his career, oceanographer Jonas Taylor is recruited by his friend Mac Mackreides, billionaire Jack Morris, and scientist Minway Zhang to lead an expedition into the deepest part of the ocean, the Mariana Trench.
Okay, so this movie starts as a pretty standard deep-sea adventure, but things take a wild turn when they discover a megalodon – a massive, prehistoric shark – is still alive! Let’s just say it quickly goes from exciting exploration to straight-up terrifying. Jason Statham leads the cast, and he’s joined by Li Bingbing, who plays a brilliant oceanographer, and a great supporting cast including Sophia Cai, Robert Taylor, Jessica McNamee, Rainn Wilson, Cliff Curtis, and Winston Chao. They all do their best to survive, but honestly, a giant shark makes things pretty difficult!
Released in 2018, The Meg was a big hit with audiences, earning over $529 million worldwide on a budget of about $178 million. Even though critics weren’t overly impressed, the film made enough money to justify a sequel, bringing back Jason Statham, Shuya Sophia Cai, and Cliff Curtis to reprise their roles.
Okay, so Meg 2: The Trench definitely made money – almost $399 million on a $139 million budget, which is a win for the studio. But honestly? Critics weren’t thrilled. As of today, it’s sitting at just 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 184 reviews. That’s actually lower than the first Meg, which managed 47% with a much larger pool of 311 reviews. It seems like while audiences enjoyed it, the critics weren’t quite as impressed this time around.
There haven’t been any updates about a possible third film in the series recently. In 2023, the director of Meg 2: The Trench, Ben Wheatley, mentioned that they had discussed making another film, but whether it would happen depended on how well the sequel performed.
What’s Next for The Meg Star and Hollywood Icon Jason Statham?
Although Jason Statham isn’t likely to reprise his role in underwater thrillers soon, he’s still committed to action-packed movies. He has two new films scheduled for 2026—Shelter, directed by Ric Roman Waugh, and Mutiny, directed by Jean-Francois Richet—where he’ll both star and produce. He’s also set to return as the assassin Adam Clay in The Beekeeper 2, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench will both be available for streaming for free on Tubi beginning Dec. 1.
