Jay-Z‘s got 99 problems, but his name ain’t one.
The rapper, Jay-Z, quietly updated his name ahead of his performance with The Roots. He added an umlaut, changing his name to JAŸ-Z for the Roots Picnic concert in Philadelphia on May 30th.
In addition, Jay-Z (born Shawn Carter) updated his name on popular streaming services like YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal to include a special accent mark.
It seems the artist, age 56, is reconnecting with his origins through this name change. Interestingly, an umlaut—those two dots above a vowel—was a recurring visual element in the artwork of his early work, including his first album, Reasonable Doubt (1996), and hit songs like “Ain’t No Na,” “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” and “Feelin’ It.”
This isn’t the first time Beyoncé’s husband has played around with his name. Back in 2013, he famously removed the hyphen from it.
He said in an interview with Big Boy’s Neighborhood that hyphens used to be very common, but aren’t as necessary now. ‘You have to adapt to how things change,’ he explained.
“I had umlauts over one of the letters,” the Grammy winner continued. “I removed the umlaut, too.”
However, the hyphen was reintroduced in time for his 2017 album 4:44.
According to a statement released to Entertainment Weekly, Jay Z has officially rebranded himself as JAY-Z. The change includes restoring the hyphen in his name and capitalizing all letters.

And what about the story behind his 13-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter’s, unusual name? Jay-Z has an explanation for that too.
He explained that they nicknamed her ‘Blueberry,’ playfully saying things like ‘Look at the little blueberry.’ Eventually, they shortened it to just ‘Blue,’ and it felt completely natural.
Jay-Z and Beyoncé chose unique names for their seven-year-old twins: Rumi and Sir Carter.
We named our daughter after the poet Rumi, as he’s always been a favorite of ours,” he shared on the Rap Radar podcast in 2017. He also described how his son seemed dignified from the moment he was born, saying, “He came out like a gentleman – very poised and confident right away.”

Sterling K. Brown went by his middle name Kelby until he was a teenager.
During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show in April 2025, he explained that his father is Sterling Brown Jr. and his grandfather is Sterling Brown Sr. He said he wanted to establish his own identity and felt the name ‘Sterling’ sounded too old for him.
Years after his father’s death from a heart attack, the actor—known for his role in This Is Us—chose to go back to using his original first name to pay tribute to him.
He explained that since his father died when he was ten, and he hadn’t heard anyone say his father’s name in over five years by the time he turned sixteen, he simply wanted to reconnect with that part of his life. That’s why he started asking people to call him Sterling.

She simply didn’t want to perform under their names, so she chose Shania Twain. She had met someone named Shania and loved the name, and that’s how her stage name was born.

She’s said it’s like a ‘drag project’ for her, which basically means it lets her control what people see and keeps her real life totally separate from all the craziness of being in the music industry. It’s how she protects herself, and I just think it’s brilliant!
