First appearing as one of the founding X-Men in 1963, Jean Grey has had an illustrious journey within Marvel Comics. Initially portrayed as the damsel in distress, Jean transformed into the team’s most potent member in a short span, proving to be a formidable force. Unyielding in her commitment to justice, Jean is not just a powerful hero but also an stylish one. Over the years, she has sported several distinctive appearances that set her apart from her fellow X-Men. Typically characterized by a mix of yellow and green, she’s left an indelible mark with numerous striking looks throughout her tenure.
Although her appearance doesn’t change as frequently as Storm’s, Jean’s looks are equally powerful and significant in their impact. Occasionally, a transformation courtesy of the Phoenix Force brings about a fresh persona for her to claim. Here we present Jean’s top 7 costumes, arranged in order of appeal.
7) Marvel Girl
I stepped out of the training suits for the first time, donning a straightforward green dress adorned with yellow gloves and a mask matching their hues. That initial green and yellow ensemble became my signature, largely staying with me from then on. While the dress may not be optimal for a hero’s attire, its distinctive appearance has earned it a spot on the ‘best looks’ list. Uncomplicated yet impactful, this original design served as the foundation for one of my most iconic suits in the future.
The suit was primarily worn after identical suits were abandoned, opting for costumes that offered subtle differences. This change occurred, and the suit was absent until near the conclusion of the Dark Phoenix Saga. It wouldn’t reappear until the Krakoa era. Quite an interesting beginning, and her future suits are expected to improve further.
6) New X-Men
Anticipating a different style perhaps, something like yellow spandex? Regardless of whether someone adores or dislikes the black leather costumes, they undeniably have an iconic status. While these outfits resonated with some, others found them less appealing. Among the heroes, Jean stood out the most, and her ensemble, featuring a long leather coat, was particularly striking.
Wasn’t yellow spandex more what you had in mind? Despite garnering admiration from some while being criticized by others, black leather costumes have become truly iconic. Some heroes rocked these outfits successfully, but others found them less appealing. Out of all the heroes, Jean looked fabulous in her long leather coat, standing out the most.
During this period, Jean Grey experienced a hiatus that lasted several years. The Phoenix reappeared and ultimately resulted in her death for approximately a decade. However, in the realm of Marvel, few truly remain deceased, with Mar-Vell being one of the exceptions. Later on, Jean would resurface, but unfortunately, her original costume was no longer available.
5) X-Men: Red
Among the costumes we’ve compiled, I must say that the one which doesn’t sport yellow or green is reminiscent of Jean Grey’s X-Men: Red ensemble. At first glance, this combo might seem unconventional, but it surprisingly echoes a timeless classic we will be discussing soon. It may appear peculiar, yet the striking blend of blue and red on Jean seems incredibly fitting for her character. This costume stands out admirably among all her other ensembles.
In Marvel Rivals, she dons this comical suit outside of her usual attire, which seems fitting and could’ve been a permanent addition given its appeal. However, it might not be every fan’s preferred style for her.
4) Original X-Factor
In simpler terms, the X-Factor suit, with its latest design and the combination of red and orange, pays tribute to Marvel’s character, Jean Grey. Although some may argue which version is superior, this new look seems truer to Jean’s character. The previous red costume, on the other hand, seemed to embody Dark Phoenix, giving off a sense of impending turmoil. However, the new suit feels more like a warm welcome back for Jean upon her resurrection.
Although her current stint isn’t one of her longest-lasting roles yet, there’s a chance it may return at some point. If this new Phoenix costume is indeed her revamped Marvel Girl look, I wouldn’t mind it in the least.
The paraphrased version maintains the original meaning while being more easily understandable and flowing naturally in conversation.
3) Jim Lee Redesign
The costume that typically comes to mind for those who grew up watching the original X-Men animated series is the redesign by Jim Lee. Changing the green to blue was an innovative decision and undeniably influenced the appearance of X-Men: Red. While it’s one of her most memorable designs, the two preceding ones stand out a bit more.
It’s no surprise that Logan had a framed picture he often gazed at, such is the quality of this costume. I must admit, I was surprised it didn’t end up being her alternate look in “Rivals”, but perhaps it may show up later. It seems clear that this suit symbolized a generation for Jean Grey, yet there are still two more to be revealed.
2) Dark Phoenix
Among X-Men fans, Dark Phoenix is often the first story that comes to mind when they think of the team. Following Jean’s mental breakdown and the catastrophic event that ensued, Dark Phoenix simply exchanged green for a touch of red, revealing the darker aspect of the Phoenix persona. Whenever you spot this costume, it’s a signal that chaos is imminent. This outfit symbolizes the maximum amount of evil that can be wrought with unlimited power, but in contrast, the following suit carries an opposite message.
In the minds of X-Men fans, Dark Phoenix is a story synonymous with the team. After Jean suffered a mental collapse leading to one of the greatest disasters ever, Dark Phoenix replaced green with red, unveiling the darker side of the Phoenix persona. When this costume appears, it’s a warning that things are about to spiral out of control. This attire symbolizes the worst that can be done when you have limitless power, but the following suit carries an opposite message.
1) Phoenix
As a die-hard fan, there’s no doubt in my mind that Phoenix takes the top spot in my book, especially when it comes to Jean Grey’s costumes. Whether it’s her iconic original Phoenix design or the current one, Phoenix stands out as Jean’s most stunning and powerful outfit. This suit truly embodies her formidable presence within the X-Men, whether she’s alive or part of the team.
To make it even more captivating, I’d suggest adding a gold sash to the ensemble – it would only enhance the overall impact of the suit and pay homage to the legend that is Jean Grey’s Phoenix persona.
This event signified the transformation Jean had been yearning for, and from that moment on, she garnered widespread admiration as the beloved character. Long live the Phoenix – although occasionally she loses her sanity, even those instances occur while wearing her most spectacular costume to date.
