Disney is usually a huge success at the box office, but 2025 has been a surprisingly difficult year for the studio. While Lilo & Stitch performed very well (earning over $1 billion worldwide), several other Disney movies, including Snow White, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts and Elio, didn’t do as well as expected. Hoping to turn things around, Disney counted on Tron: Ares to be a hit, but unfortunately, it didn’t meet even modest expectations. Now, star Jeff Bridges has offered a thoughtful perspective on the situation.
Jeff Bridges recently talked to Entertainment Weekly about the disappointing box office results of Tron: Ares. He pointed out that initial reactions to movies can change over time, recalling how Heaven’s Gate was initially seen as a failure but is now considered a classic. Bridges suggested that tastes evolve, even personally – he often dislikes a movie at first but later revisits it and wonders what he initially disliked about it.
Can Tron: Ares Become a Cult Favorite on Home Media?

During a discussion about the opening weekend of Tron: Ares, Bridges pointed out that this pattern is common for the Tron movies. Both previous films initially underperformed in theaters but later found a larger audience. Ares is experiencing a similar start, earning only $33.2 million domestically during its first weekend. Currently, the film has made $63.7 million in the U.S. and $124.1 million worldwide, which is less than fellow Jared Leto film, Morbius.
I’m really disappointed to hear that Disney is expected to lose over $100 million on Tron: Ares. It seems unlikely to become a box office success, but I’m hoping it will find an audience once it’s available to stream at home. We’ve seen Disney turn things around with streaming before – Snow White and Captain America: Brave New World both did incredibly well after their theatrical runs. It’s just a different world now, post-pandemic. People aren’t rushing to theaters like they used to, and with movies becoming available at home so quickly, many are happy to wait and watch them there. I’m crossing my fingers that Tron: Ares can become a streaming hit and still find its fans!
Similar to Tron: Legacy, Tron: Ares features a striking visual style and a memorable soundtrack, which were key to the earlier film’s dedicated fanbase. However, it remains to be seen if those elements will be enough to make Ares a hit when it’s released. While Tron movies haven’t typically been known for strong stories, early reactions suggest that the narrative and characters are particularly weak in Ares. Furthermore, with ongoing debates about AI, audiences might struggle to connect with a main character created by artificial intelligence. This, combined with the many other choices available on Disney+, could make it difficult for Tron: Ares to stand out and attract viewers.
I’ve been following the news about Tron: Ares, and it sounds like Disney is being cautious after its performance. Even though the movie hinted at more to come, it seems unlikely we’ll see another Tron film in theaters. They’re hoping it does well when people can buy or rent it at home, to at least recoup some of their costs. Thankfully, the Lightcycle ride at the parks is still really popular, so the Tron universe isn’t going away completely – Disney is still making money from it, which is good news for fans like me!
