Jen Shah Details “Poop Duty” With Elizabeth Holmes During Prison Stay

Jen Shah had Elizabeth Holmes to lean on during her time in prison.

After being released from prison, the former star of Real Housewives of Salt Lake City shared details about her almost three years at Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, including a close friendship she developed with the founder of Theranos.

Oh my gosh, you guys, Jen actually said that about Lizzie and her! In a People magazine interview, no less! Basically, Jen was explaining that when you’re both suddenly super famous, you just get each other, you know? You’re going through all the same crazy stuff and naturally gravitate towards each other. It’s so sweet and proves they’re real friends! I KNEW it!

Although Jen—who spent three years in prison after being convicted of conspiring to commit wire fraud—mentioned feeling like her public notoriety was a source of shame, it was a different matter that truly connected her and Elizabeth.

Jen was telling me about how we ended up on cleanup duty together, and she thinks sharing something like that really bonds you to a person. Honestly, I totally agree – when you’re dealing with that with someone, you definitely get close!

Jen called cleaning the communal bathroom after it got particularly dirty “poop duty,” and it was assigned as a punishment. If the bathroom received three complaints, you had to sit in there and monitor its use. After each person used the bathroom, you were responsible for either cleaning up after them if they didn’t, or reminding them to do it themselves.

December marked a difficult time for Jen, as she was released from prison. She described a particularly unsettling experience, recalling, “You’re just sitting in the bathroom, imagining the smells and everything involved with cleaning up after others.”

Jen and Elizabeth definitely grew closer during the experience. Elizabeth is currently serving a little over 11 years in prison after being convicted of defrauding investors in her former health company, and this wasn’t the only time they had together.

You know, one of the things that really helped my partner and me get through a tough time was making time for each other, even when life felt completely packed. We were both juggling so much during the day, but every evening, we’d prioritize a walk. That walk became our time – a chance to really connect, share what we were missing from family, and honestly discuss everything happening, even the difficult things related to prison. It was a simple ritual, but it made all the difference.

You know, I’ve been hearing a lot about how important connection is, and it’s so lovely to see it in action! I recently learned that I, along with Sharrieff Shah, really built a strong bond through just having really deep, meaningful conversations. It’s amazing how much you can connect with someone when you truly talk to them.

Jen explained that prison is a very painful experience. Simply having someone to talk to – someone who would listen without judgment and understand what you’re going through – can make a huge difference. It’s about being able to express your feelings, even if that means just needing to walk around and cry, with someone who gets it.

Although Jen and Elizabeth were held in the same facility as Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently in prison for 20 years for helping with sex trafficking crimes, Jen chose not to interact with her.

“I chose that,” she said. “I chose to have very limited interaction with her.”
