Jennie Garth Shares How Amanda Bynes Shaped Her Approach to Motherhood

I’m a big fan of Amanda Bynes, and so is Jennie Garth! Jennie’s told me she really appreciates a lot about Amanda, but there’s one thing specifically that she always points out as being special.

The actress remembered how working with Amanda on the popular sitcom What I Like About You – twenty years ago – gave her a new way of thinking about raising her teenage daughters.

Jennie shared with TopMob News that working with Amanda gave her a new perspective. She realized she hadn’t experienced what it was like to play a character older than another, or to be around the lively energy of teenagers before.

As the 54-year-old put it, “She had so much overflowing teenage energy.”

When the show first aired on The WB in 2002, Amanda was only 16 years old. Jennie Garth, at 30, was already a mother to two daughters, Luca Bella and Lola Ray Facinelli, with her then-husband, Peter Facinelli. Later that same year, she welcomed another daughter, Fiona Eve Facinelli, and she and Peter eventually separated in 2013.

Even though her daughters were young, the former star of Beverly Hills, 90210 admitted she felt a bit anxious about them becoming teenagers—but Amanda reassured her and eased those worries.

“She really made me feel excited for it,” Jennie shared, “because I had so much fun with her.”

She shared that watching their interaction made her envision how she wanted to relate to her own children as they grew up – enjoying the same things, being playful, and staying young at heart. It helped her feel more confident and less anxious about navigating the teenage years with her daughters, which she found truly wonderful.

Jennie wasn’t just struck by Amanda’s youthful energy. Years later, Jennie – who hosts the I Choose Me podcast, recently published a memoir with the same title, and is preparing for her I Choose Me Summit in Los Angeles on April 25th – still remembers how hilarious Amanda was on the show.

Jennie praised Amanda’s excellent comedic timing. She mentioned she often rewatches a show Amanda is in on Netflix, sometimes just having it on in the background, and always ends up laughing.

“It was so silly and fun,” she added, “and just real, feel-good vibes from that show.”

Even though Jennie and Amanda haven’t stayed in close contact since their show finished in 2006, Jennie will always support her former TV sister, particularly now that Amanda is focusing on her music.

Jennie said, “I wish her all the best.” She encouraged pursuing passions and never giving up, adding that she fully supports this current path the person is taking.

“What I Like About You” was a standout part of Amanda’s impressive career. But that’s not all – keep reading to discover more of her famous roles in television and film!

This retelling of Snow White updates the story to modern times. Amanda, deciding sorority life isn’t a good fit, moves in with seven quirky guys – a playful nod to the original seven dwarfs.

Amanda totally nailed the role of a holier-than-thou mean girl.

The actress won the Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite TV Actress three times for her work on the comedy sketch series.

Amanda’s first film was a huge success, earning an impressive $48 million at the box office. The numbers speak for themselves!

Does anyone else fondly recall Amanda playing the role of Jennie Garth’s younger, spirited sister in that show?

The actress transformed herself for her role as a teenage boy in this adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. It was such a fun performance, we think even Shakespeare himself would have enjoyed it!

Okay, seriously, I already knew she was amazing, but this remake just proved it! Everyone always loved her acting, but hearing her sing? Forget about it! She absolutely nailed it – she’s just as incredible a singer as she is an actress. I’m completely obsessed, obviously!

It’s always open for discussion what audiences truly want, but many people definitely enjoyed Amanda’s performance in this comedy, and having popular British actor Colin Firth play her father was a nice bonus.
