Jennifer Garner Says She Once Bit Off a “Chunk” of an Actor’s Ear

Jennifer Garner once took “play it by ear” a little too literally.

Jennifer Garner, who stars in The Last Thing He Told Me, recently shared a story about working with actor and stuntman Sala Baker again on set. They hadn’t seen each other in almost 20 years, not since they filmed an intense fight scene together on a previous project.

During a February 3rd panel discussion for the show, Jennifer recounted her last fight with the actor, explaining that director Pete Berg instructed him to attempt to seriously harm her. She said they hadn’t planned out much of the fight choreography, and she was told to just focus on protecting herself.

She continued, explaining that they both jumped into action, and she ended up climbing onto his back. She even bit his ear – they have a photo to prove it, showing a piece missing! They weren’t messing around.

When she and Sala filmed the scene in season two of The Last Thing He Told Me where his character attempts to kidnap hers, both actors gave powerful, unreserved performances.

I remember the crew being a little worried about me—it was early in filming, maybe the first or second day—but I was determined to do the scene exactly as planned. They asked if I could be careful, but I told them, ‘No, I need to do this my way!’ I needed to get it right, and I didn’t want anyone holding back.

Although Jennifer easily moved past her initial comment, her point wasn’t lost on her fellow actor, Nicolaj Coster-Waldau.

“Could we go over that one more time?” asked the Game of Thrones actress, interrupting the conversation. She was speaking to her co-star from the Apple TV+ show and asked, “You actually bit off a piece of his ear?”

Okay, so Jennifer just said she did something “like Mike Tyson” – you guys, she meant the Holyfield ear-biting incident from ’97! And Nicolaj, he was livid. He actually turned to the whole audience and was like, “Seriously? You’re all acting like this is good? What is wrong with you people?!” I couldn’t believe it, it was insane! He was so shocked everyone seemed okay with that reference, it was amazing to witness, honestly.

But with a grin one could say went, well, ear to ear, Jennifer stood by her actions.

“Don’t make me mad,” she warned. “I seem nice. I’ve warned you before.”

Beyond the physical demands of the role, Jennifer explained why playing Hannah Hall—a woman fiercely dedicated to protecting her stepdaughter Bailey (Angourie Rice)—has been so rewarding.

Jennifer described how her character had meticulously planned for every possible scenario, all to protect Bailey. Seeing Hannah finally understand the danger they faced, and then watching her carefully execute the plan, bringing Bailey along with her in this elaborate escape, was incredibly rewarding, Jennifer said.
