Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are expected to reprise their roles in a new Hunger Games movie. They will be appearing in Lionsgate’s upcoming prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, marking their first time on screen together as Katniss and Peeta since the original series concluded.
Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will appear in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping
The new Hunger Games movie, Sunrise on the Reaping, takes place 24 years before the original story with Katniss Everdeen. Surprisingly, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, who played Katniss and Peeta, will appear in the film, according to Deadline.
The story connects to the new Suzanne Collins book through a scene where older versions of Katniss and Peeta hear Haymitch Abernathy share his own difficult experiences in the Hunger Games. This clever setup lets Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson reprise their popular roles without interfering with the prequel’s story, and also offers a peek at what happens to their characters later on.
This story focuses on a young Haymitch, portrayed by Joseph Zada, and takes place on the day of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games—also known as the Second Quarter Quell. This particularly brutal edition of the Games pits 48 tributes against each other, and follows Haymitch’s struggle to survive and eventually become the mentor to Katniss and Peeta.
The new film, directed by Francis Lawrence, who has worked on previous installments, is generating significant excitement. The initial trailer received an impressive 109 million views within a single day, and recent announcements have finally put an end to months of rumors.
Josh Hutcherson had previously responded to rumors about returning to the Hunger Games franchise, telling Brit + Co in August that while he hadn’t heard anything, “That’d be cool.” He also expressed his lasting affection for the series, saying, “Hunger Games is amazing, and I’ve loved it for many years.” Both Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence are currently enjoying successful careers – Lawrence recently received her seventh Golden Globe nomination for Die My Love, and Hutcherson appeared in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, which opened to $64 million.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is set to release on November 20, 2026.
