Margot Robbie’s performance in the 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is often considered one of her best, and the movie itself received widespread praise. Before Robbie was cast as Sharon Tate, reports suggested Quentin Tarantino was also considering Jennifer Lawrence. Lawrence later said she believed she wasn’t chosen because she was considered “not pretty enough” for the part. Recently, some previously known details have come to light, offering more insight into this story.
What Jennifer Lawrence Said About Not Getting Cast In Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Jennifer Lawrence revealed that Quentin Tarantino had repeatedly expressed interest in working with her. Host Josh Horowitz brought up the role she was offered in The Hateful Eight, which Lawrence now regrets turning down. He also asked about whether Tarantino had considered her for the role of Sharon Tate in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – a part that ultimately went to Margot Robbie. Lawrence responded by saying:
He initially wanted me for the role, but then people said I wasn’t attractive enough to play Sharon Tate, and I didn’t get the part.
When she finished speaking, the audience reacted with shock. Horowitz immediately denied it, but Lawrence reinforced her statement, explaining:
I really think it happened, though a part of me wonders if I’ve just repeated the story so many times I’ve convinced myself it’s true. Maybe he never saw me as a contender for the role, and the harsh comments online just stung so much I built a narrative around it. It’s hard to know for sure, but that’s how I remember it.
It’s important to clarify that Lawrence claims Tarantino never actually said those things about her. She believes online discussions about her appearance might have been a factor in why she wasn’t cast in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Recently, some older statements surfaced revealing that Debra Tate did, in fact, make a similar comment to the one Lawrence mentioned.
What Debra Tate Said About Jennifer Lawrence And Margot Robbie
Before the cast of Quentin Tarantino’s acclaimed film was finalized in 2017, Debra Tate, Sharon Tate’s sister, was questioned about Margot Robbie and Emma Lawrence potentially playing her sister. TMZ directly asked Debra which actress she preferred. She responded by saying:
Both actresses are very talented, but I think Margot Robbie would be a better fit for the role. She physically resembles Sharon, and her overall presence is similar. I haven’t really considered Jennifer Lawrence for the part, and it’s not a reflection on her abilities – I just don’t think she has the right look for it. It sounds harsh, but I have a certain image in mind for the character.
Debra Tate explained that if her sister hadn’t been so focused on her appearance in the public eye, physical beauty wouldn’t have been such a central part of her identity.
I heard a really interesting story about the casting for the Sharon Tate biopic. While it’s not officially confirmed, apparently Sharon’s sister actually said Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t quite the right look for the role – that she didn’t feel she was pretty enough. It makes you wonder if that played a part in why she didn’t get it, though no one’s said so for sure.
Margot Robbie reached out to Quentin Tarantino, telling him how eager she was to collaborate with him when she learned about the role. As casting for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood began, news outlets widely reported that she was a potential candidate.
In 2021, Quentin Tarantino mentioned on the WTF podcast that he’d thought about casting Jennifer Lawrence as Squeaky Fromme – a role that ultimately went to Dakota Fanning. He noted that Lawrence was keen on the part, but it just didn’t come together.
Both actresses were major stars and continue to be successful today. Since 2019, Margot Robbie has appeared in films like The Suicide Squad, Barbie, and Babylon. Jennifer Lawrence has worked alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Don’t Look Up and starred in No Hard Feelings and Die My Love.
