Jenny Han Addresses Summer I Turned Pretty 3’s Lack of Taylor Swift

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m delighted to share some exciting news with fellow fans! If you’ve been eagerly anticipating the return of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” for its third season, here’s something to look forward to – there’s still room for more Taylor Swift tracks to grace our playlists! So, let’s keep our fingers crossed for another musical journey filled with memorable melodies and heartfelt tunes.

In the first episode, Taylor’s 2022 song “You’re Losing Me” was played as Belly discovered Jeremiah’s infidelity in Mexico. Since then, no new tunes from Taylor have appeared-leaving fans curious about when they might hear more, given the series’ history of incorporating songs by the Grammy-winning artist.

Luckily, Jenny hinted that they may not have to wait much longer.

In a recent interview with Variety, published on August 7, she playfully hinted, “I’m inclined to suggest… stay tuned.

Many fans have proposed various explanations for the apparent scarcity of Taylor Swift songs this season, some speculating that her music might have served as a reflection of Belly’s inner thoughts – a narrative element that has similarly been missing from the current season.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the absence of Belly’s narrative and flashbacks in this current season. It seems like the creators are intentionally keeping us in the dark about her true thoughts and emotions, which makes for an intriguing watch, but leaves us yearning for more insight into her character.

It’s understandable that both Swifties and fans of “Taylor’s Version – Red (Taylor’s Version)” have been eagerly anticipating more, given that “Red” and “Daylight” were highlighted in the trailer for season three, and even a previously unreleased version of “Delicate” was featured in season two. However, it should be noted that Taylor Swift has not yet released “Reputation (Taylor’s Version)” at the time this statement was made.

Jenny revealed to The Los Angeles Times in August 2023 that it was a secret, even within Amazon. She felt incredibly fortunate and thankful for having access to it, expressing deep appreciation and respect towards the show’s bond with Taylor Swift.

She acknowledged that her followers are closely watching how she employs Taylor’s songs, particularly since she previously utilized them to portray her relationship with Belly and Conrad, and now she’s using an unreleased track for the first time.

The fans seem to feel deceived,” she playfully remarked about the fan response following the use of the song for a scene centered around Belly’s relationship with Jeremiah. “But let me clarify, I never implied that Taylor Swift’s music is exclusive to Belly and Conrad. ‘Delicate’ represents the state of mind and heart that Belly finds herself in during that particular moment.

Additionally, she pointed out that each tune she selects carries significance. Fans wondered about her choice of using Taylor’s “Snow on the Beach” for a flashback scene in season two, and she clarified that this was not a hasty or unconsidered choice.

Later in the season, when she mentions ‘Snow on the Beach,’ it’s eerie as it evokes that specific moment. You could say it’s akin to reliving a poignant or somewhat distressing memory.

Initially, “We’ll Always Have Summer” starts as Lola Tung’s character, Belly Conklin, wraps up her freshman year at Finch University. However, it’s important to note that the events of season three in “The Summer I Turned Pretty” occur at the tail end of her junior year instead.

In the series, it’s worth noting that Jeremiah Fisher, played by Gavin Casalegno, didn’t actually cheat on Belly after just two years of dating as commonly believed; instead, they had already been together for a full four-year relationship before the infidelity occurred.

Prior to starting her freshman year and opening her dorm room, her brother Sean Kaufman (previously known as Steven Conklin) hastily wrote “Belly” instead of “Isabel” on the door. Later in the series, her college friend Sofia Bryant (originally Anika Johnson) refers to her as Belly.

However, in the book, Belly didn’t correct anyone who called her by her government name.

Apparently, I didn’t intentionally decide to be called Isabel. It simply transpired that way,” she mentioned in the book. “I recall my awkward fumbling with the key, looking up at the door, and noticing the name ‘Isabel,’ gleaming with glue-on rhinestones.

Subsequently, Isabel identified herself as such to her roommate, Jillian Chapel, and henceforth, everyone at Finch came to know her by that name.

Jenny Han’s novel “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before”, part of a trilogy that later became a Netflix adaptation, was published three years following “We’ll Always Have Summer”. However, the series cleverly acknowledged its predecessor by incorporating subtle nods or references, known as Easter eggs.

In the story, there was a picture of Belly and Jeremiah, dressed as Peter Kavinsky and Lara Jean Covey, hanging on her dorm room wall. The crossword puzzle Conrad Fisher (Chris Briney) was completing with Belly during Christmas contained a clue hinting at the sequel to the novel, “P.S. I Still Love You.

The initial season of the TV show delved into Conrad’s battles with mental health issues, such as panic attacks, as he grappled with the news that his mother, Susannah Fisher (portrayed by Rachel Blanchard), had been diagnosed with cancer for a second time.

By the third day, the Stanford University student could be found meeting with a counselor before deciding to go back to Cousins Beach for a tribute dedicated to Susannah. During this consultation, they discussed his apprehensions about attending the event, but they didn’t discuss in detail his intricate love triangle situation. At least he will be there, correct?

In the show, Belly finds out she’s been moved from the standby list for studying abroad in Paris during the next semester. Consequently, this prevents her from sharing a dorm with Anika in the fall season. At that time, Jeremiah hadn’t yet proposed to her.

However, in the book, she changes her boarding plans because of her unexpected engagement. Anika still understands as she tells Belly in the text, “I’m not mad. I mean, yeah, it sucks that we won’t be living together, but I’ll figure something out.”

In contrast to their past unmentioned in the books, Taylor Jewel (previously known as Rain Spencer) and Steven’s romantic storyline takes a back seat in the most recent season. Despite Taylor being involved with frat boy Davis and Steven dating Mia, their clandestine affair dates back to when they reconnected in Manhattan during spring break – a time that also saw Jeramiah betray Belly.

After Steven shares with Taylor, during their drive together, that he ended things with Mia to give their relationship another chance, an emotional Taylor requests he pull over. Once she exits the car, Steven gets hit by another vehicle while attempting a U-turn and falls into a medically induced coma. Fortunately, he recovers completely in the end.

Although the same can’t be said for their relationship—at least at this point in the season.
